Yeah, they won because men didn't let them play what they wanted, so they had to play football.

Damn y'all need to chill.

First, we're a nation founded on a genocide that then proceeded to import people - mostly from Europe and Asia. Surprise! Immigrants seek out and share things from their home countries.

Second, we're a massive country that doesn't have a homogenous culture. No one would say NYC, Hawaii or Texas has no culture.

Obviously, this is a joke; but says something about y'alls own provincialism that so many in this thread genuinely think America has no culture.

Sorry was the argument who invented movies or who makes the highest grossing movies? I understand your pride might be hurt but switching the perimeter of the argument is a losing move. Nobody argued that the USA doesn’t make great movies, don’t panic.

MundaneInternetGuy
16

That fact that movies were invented in France does not make all movies French. The argument isn't where movies were invented, anyway, it's whether or not America has culture.

pontiflexrex
-9

Where did you read that I said that all movies are French? I don’t understand the attempts to exaggerate to ridicule, anybody can just look up the thread to understand you’re trying to shift the perimeter of the argument: “look at this guy saying all movies are French!”

What happens in your mind to devise such a strategy?

And if you go up said thread, you’ll notice that OC stayed that the US invented movies. Which can be disputed. But not by me anymore, I’m tired of people confusing being the best at something with having invented something.

The US did not invented the cinema. This is a fact.

The US make the highest grossing films overall. That’s also a fact (which can lead some to declare that the US are the best at making movies, that’s a somewhat fair conclusion).

The US makes the best movies overall. That would be an opinion and something that could never really be declared as fact.

It seems reasonable and yet fragile national egos are getting so upset that I must say I’m very troubled.

Anyway, have a good night/day, I’ll go watch the American remake of a French movie on my Japanese TV.

The inventor of television was an American named Farnsworth.

pontiflexrex
9

I’m curious to know if this is something you’re taught in school? As sometimes countries tend to rewrite history.

But a very quick search will tell you that before Farnsworth did his thing, engineers from Scotland, England and Germany invented what is considered television...

xenophobe3691
-1

It could be considered television the same way that Babbage's Analytical Engine could be considered a computer. The TV that was popularized, the one that made images by scanning and rasterization, was his invention.

pontiflexrex
6

There is a Wikipedia page on the history of television.,, I don’t know what’s to be gained from rewriting history like this.

I’m from France, I won’t pretend that we invented wine just because it’s a big part of our culture. It can be something we’re great at without us being inventors of it.

xenophobe3691
-1

I don’t understand your point. The Analytical Engine was a computer, but has nothing to do with modern computing. Same with television

pontiflexrex
6

My point is the even if you choose to disregard the mechanical television to focus only on the history of the electronic television, Farnsworth still didn’t invent of that branch of the television technology.

It’s an easily proven fact (hence Wikipedia), so one might wonder why the insistance of making TV a US invention. You can still say that the USA are the best at TV without having the historical honor of having invented it...

F1shB0wl816
-2

That’s like saying graham or whoever they want to argue who made the first phone is responsible for iPhones.

Nobody uses mechanical tvs, tvs as we know it are an American invention. If you type in who invented the electric television, farnsworth is the first name you see with two other Americans who were pioneers of early electric tvs and a Scottish guy, who I didn’t check but probably working In America as well.

I mean it’s easily proven that Americans were responsible for the invention and pioneering of electrical tvs. Sure some other guy may have made something similar, that worked totally different, and quickly became obsolete. But it was just a foundation, certainly not deserving credit for what we know as tv.

Like have you seen a mechanical tv? You could find toys as a kid that work exactly the same, a reel with like 8 pictures that you’d spin and hold up to the light and see, and move the reel for different images. It could only make 7.5 frames a second from the receiver, and never took off with the public. Was he close? Sure. Brilliant, most likely? But did he hit the mark? Certainly not.

What's considered to be the first motion picture was made in America (a dude set up a bunch of cameras to film a horse running) and different film cameras and projectors were developed concurrently in the US and France afterward, but even if film were invented in France, its undeniable that America has produced some great cinema and American cinema alone constitutes culture, never mind all of the rest of American art and literature

pontiflexrex
6

Sure if you want to consider zoopraxiscope (the horse thing) as cinema, that works... I guess we can all pick and choose the starting point of anything to make it fit our own sense of national pride... As a Frenchman I’ll tend to consider that the Lumières brothers invented it but that might appear inconceivable to someone else I’m sure.

roybatty1602
3

I'm not calling it cinema I'm calling it the technology of motion pictures. And the Lumières were working on motion picture production at the same time as Edison. Just accusing me of being some vague insulting thing doesn't change my point at all

pontiflexrex
7

Yeah, that’s my point exactly: someone was arguing that the cinema was invented on the USA. The cinema itself was invented elsewhere, but of course we can change the perimeter of the argument and go back to the “technology of moving pictures” to make it seem like the original statement wasn’t wrong...

ah, I find it so strange when people say white people dont have culture or americans dont have culture. Im afraid i dont know what you mean? Just because its the norm doesnt mean its not a culture!

For one, American culture is more like, freedom and standing up for your rights. Independence and freedom of movement is important. Everyone needs to have a car. Making money and being successful is important. All that shit.

For two, although this post wasnt a part of this, I do see it around often. White people most definitely have a culture...? Please direct your attention to europe and all of its history!

Edit: So sorry! Should clarify that the second and third paragraph are completely separate points! American culture is heavily defined by a variety of cultures, but that in itself is its culture. The "melting pot" like. Its not stealing culture as much as it is integrating it. Less the british mosaic, more a melting pot and a joining of peoples. Regardless though, if we play the game of whose culture has roots in whos culture We'll be here all day! Haha. Just saying we have developed our own culture in 200 years, for better or for worse.

Also, not saying American culture is good or bad! Just saying it exists.

But he [u/CarbonOnion] was strongly implying that the dominant (Only) culture in America was Anglo-European "white" culture. Simply not true. American culture is extremely diverse with wide ranging cultural influences from "Native" cultures like the Iroquois, who's "Great Law of Peace" was a strong influence in the formation of the country, to East African and Caribbean cultures that have had lasting impacts to what we think of as "American" food and music, to strong asian influences in the late 1800s on that left their mark on architecture and linguistics.

I don't give a shit if you think America has a culture or not, it does indeed but not the type or form that most others do.

However you're absolutely fooling yourself if you think it's got anything to do with freedom, independence or actually standing up for anything. If anything by first world standards in those categories it's very much the opposite.

CarbonOnion
2

Ah jeez... um. Well it is rather young for a country. So while it doesnt have the same kind of culture as other areas, it does have its own unique culture that quite makes sense for its age!

As for the second one, I'm not here to debate that! I dont really know how i feel about it. But either way, our culture is based around independence, freedom, and individualism. Not to say that necessarily means it is free, but just to say its the mindset that americans have, if that makes sense. Or a common recurring theme, to say. Hope I explained that okay haha.

Sgt-Butter

Does the average American have a choice with the wars? Our culture is one that it’s the people control the government. Once we realized what the Vietnam War was, the PEOPLE became Anti-War.

Do you think the average American likes having to pay arm and leg for our fucking basic medicine? No we don’t. There is a divide between the American People and those in top top 1% with control. And I say only half that top tier is truly malicious.

Stop blaming America for the problems we are trying to fix. I’m so sick of foreigners butting in and going “hAhA heAlTHcARe SUCK!!!11” and “wow you guys are bad”, what the fuck do you know about the problems the people are desperately trying to correct? You arnt living it, you are just watching the surface of an ocean of complex systems. It will take years to deal with our issues and more problems will arise in that time. The fact of the matter is that we are trying to fix it.

If America didn’t spend billions on the Marshall plan to rebuild Europe, and donate the blood of its young and healthy, it would still be a shithole of ruins. Even Britain’s manufacturing industry took the hit until today for worthless war reparations.

I don't know, I feel like American culture is more something that as I European I don't understand because it's very bizzare. For example the fact that your medical care is privatised is a bit weird as my health care is free. And then there's a lot of Anti American sentiment because of what happens over seas, which again seems like all of us are poking our noises into a place that it should be and not taking the responsibility of our actions seriously. I'm not saying that America has never produced anything good, but it seems like your still a very isolationist nation that appears to be going down our British route of Imperialism, which I highly wouldnt recommend. Time will tell of course but I still feel like the American Dream is long dead, along with the fact that your going back into your isolationist state once more.

Bit of advice mate, you can call your friends cunt, you can call your family’s cunt but you don’t call random people you don’t know cunt unless you mean it, cunt.

Yeah it's almost as if directly insulting someone's culture is offensive or something who'da thunk it

IanMazgelis

Most people are more annoyed at the double standard than anything else. I'm sure there are a lot of people who would say no culture should be made fun of, and a lot of people who would say any culture is fair to make fun of. However, when a subreddit only makes fun of one culture, well that's a double standard worth being upset about.

I think being angry at double standards comes up more often than either "side" is willing to admit. Most people just don't want to hear out what the person they're arguing with is actually upset about. And I think the way I, without thinking, phrased that sentence really is the problem. Most people on the internet, including and maybe especially Reddit, don't want to have discussions, they want to "win" arguments.

Wait no, I was being sarcastic as in I was really saying that telling a mean joke really is being mean, and that people who say that Trump was "joking" about running for a 3rd term have their head up their ass.

It’s a shitty, overused joke, just like the French surrendering or the Japan only making anime

quinn_the_potato

Oh no we take jokes perfectly well. We’ve heard school shooting jokes, fat jokes, independence jokes, president jokes, racism jokes, basically the whole shabang.

It’s just the fact that they aren’t true. They’re stereotypes.

Tons of other countries get offended when jokes are made about them. British teeth, French flags, Chinese female babies, Japanese cartoons. It happens to everyone.

Some are true some aren’t. The ones mentioned in the post are simply not true

OneOverTwo

I mean it doesn't stop being culture just because you don't like it.

(I find this especially weird since the USA has a big habit of trying to shove it's culture onto the rest of the world.)

Aboriginal Australians are the worlds oldest continuous culture. Australians invented the fridge, wi-fi, the worlds first full length dramatic feature film, the black box, the development of penicillin into a form actually usable by humans, the cochlear implant, the worlds first baby from a frozen embryo, the polymer money now used across the world was invented in Australia, box wine, etc etc etc.

ITT: Salty 'Muricans who can't take a joke

Commandant_Donut

There is no punchline. It would be like saying there is no economy in Poland and then when some one says that doesn't make any sense, being like "you mad bro". There are ways to poke fun of American culture's consumerism and peculiarities that are actually... funny? Functional as a zinger?

An example: Maybe all that European inbreeding over the centuries as kneecapped your ability to craft basic jokes.

There, now all you have to do sub out European with Alabama or Appalachia and you'll be well on your way!

quinn_the_potato

Well then what’s your point if you’ve heard them all? So have we. They’re obviously not true anyway, but alas... I have no jokes about South Africa for I don’t know much about them. That’s where your entitlement comes from. People can’t make jokes about your race so you simply make jokes about theirs and say that they’re mad. You obviously wouldn’t get mad as they wouldn’t be true, but the jokes featured in the post are so overused and untrue that it’s annoying. Stop being a bitch and saying we’re mad when something is blatantly not true and is simply there to make a bad image of us. It’s pathetic.

The_Rolling_Stone

My point is if you made a joke I've heard before (or haven't) it still wouldn't make me salty. And man you are just proving my point about your own saltiness.

The only problem with the fat free part is that humans literally cannot live without any fat in their body. Like I get they were trying to say excessive fat, but going under 2% body fat for men and 10% body fat for women.
