I ordered some magnetic putty from AliExpress. Not only did it start eating through its metal container, I found out that particular brand had been recalled in Canada for high levels of arsenic. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised...

thesingularity004

The amount of elemental mercury that would potentially be absorbed through your skin is really quite small. It's the vapor, or swallowing the metal, where you get into some real danger. For example, the large vats of mercury that hat makers would use is why you'd be "as mad as a hatter", or why breaking a fluorescent light is dangerous, it's full of mercury vapor. And the old mercury thermometer breaking in your child's mouth, that's mucho no bueno.

Edited for clarity after further research. Ignore the " Hey science here" guy, the CDC and WHO both agree if you touch it, a small amount may passthrough your skin, but not usually enough to harm you.

Edit again: the study the person below talks about how mercury vapor is harmful, not absorption through skin. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Editeditedit: on volatility, that's why the hatters went mad, the large open vats of mercury fuming. But there's a huge difference in a 4m2 surface area vs a pea size ball of mercury.

Also, I never once advocated for anyone to go pick up liquid mercury. But I don't think people need to panic if a bit accidentally touches their skin. There's far more danger, and a far higher chance of a fluorescent light breaking and being exposed to mercury vapor that way.

Thank you. I have a childhood memory of playing with mercury, certainly in my hands and I'm pretty sure I held it in my mouth at one point. I think I remember it because of the horror my babysitter expressed when she found me with it. I always wondered if that would come back to bite me in my old age.

KaiserTom
13

Despite common belief, elemental mercury is actually pretty safe; so much so that you can swallow a tube of it (don't) and it will pass through you pretty harmlessly, maybe give you the shits. It's the organic version (methylmercury) that people lump under the colloquialism "mercury" that is the really dangerous one, since your body readily intakes it as fast as it can and tries to use it in bodily processes to disastrous consequences.

Uss22

Generally if it's not a brand I trust or i'm well aware of:

  1. Check Reviews - If it doesn't have any reviews just skip it all together, if the reviews are clearly spoofed do the same. Also even if it has a ton of positive 5 star reviews that seem legit, see what the 1 star reviews say
  2. Check the images - See if they're professional or photoshopped (for example an off-brand headphone where all the images are just the headphones badly photoshopped onto a stock photo)
  3. Generally, having Amazon Prime shipping is a good sign for me

Usually after I run through those I can make a decision on whether or not I want to trust the product, If im still unsure i'll usually just skip it and look for another brand to be safe

treefitty350
22

You should be looking at the 2-4 star range way more. People are stupid, they either review 5 stars or 1 star. The smart people who think about their review and had an abnormal experience will detail it in the 2-4 star range, often with less emotion than the 1 & 5.

Engineer here. I was also very skeptical as soon as I saw the nut flying off. You'd need a much stronger magnetic field, and even then I'm not sure it's possible.

For anyone reading this who hasn't read up on magnets, magnetic fields drop exponentially quadratically as a function of distance. So you would at the very least expect the nut to slow down as it approaches the top of the bolt.

Edit: quadratic not exponential

Yea, you'd need a rotating magnet in the first place anyway. There's no way a force normal to the nut face is going to make it spin off like that, unless the helix angle is sufficiently large and friction against the bolt is small.

nowadaykid
15

Which would make the bolt pretty useless anyway

Sillychina
2

Yeah I was going to say this. The mechanical advantage of a screw is huge, and the field has to be huge to hold a nut in the air, let alone spin it off a screw.

If you're not being sarcastic and poking fun at the guy in tandem, or for other readers who may be confused:

Exponential is the class of function ab^(cx) where x is the independent variable

Magnetic field falls off at x^3 or whatever (x = distance) which is polynomial (geometric?) not exponential

MyNameIsNardo
3

It's inverse square, so x-2. And yeah, I was being sarcastic.

The main difference being that, contrary to an exponential, an inverse square function has a vertical asymptote, meaning it'll approach infinity at some finite x value. That's very important when looking at field strength.

I'm also an engineer who was skeptical. The weird thing that caught my eye was how the putty was "eating" the bearing, but seemed to be repelled by the bolt. Didn't make sense

CryogenicFire
1

Yeah that and also I doubt magnetic putty fields can produce enough force to do this. The bolt's path is restricted at a very shallow angle because of the threading, so any direct upward force would essentially be normal to the path and not produce any motion. It would require some internal voodoo to do that

bkfst_of_champinones
1

Also, to be repulsed, mustn’t there also be a magnet inside the nut? If it were made of steel/ferrous metal, it would have been attracted to the putty, not repelled, right (depending on the orientation of the magnet)?

Konijndijk

It's not possible no matter the feild strength. Paramagnetic materials are not repelled by magnets, theyre attracted.

Even if the putty could repel the nut, no amount of constant force can unscrew a real bolt like that. The pitch angle is always steep enough for the frictional force to overcome any axial forces, by design.

Thank you! I knew that was fake because it didn't slow down as it got further from the putty (not to mention it didn't seem to repel the bolt, and that I've had similar putty and it wasn't very strong, and certainly not strong enough to push a bolt that turns 20x per inch)

Pearlfish usually like to live alone inside a sea cucumber, but sometimes a pair will take up residence in the same host. One very special case, discovered in 1977 by New Zealand biologist Victor Benno Meyer-Rochow from Jacobs University in Germany, saw no less than 15 pearlfish living inside a single sea cucumber’s anus.
