Crossfit events involve many different "legs." Depending on the workout, this could have been after completing x amount reps of a lift, a 5k, handstand walks, or pull-ups - sometimes all of the above. Crossfit (the sport) is nuts.

Because both are peak woo?

5213
28

How is crossfit peak woo?

It's not different than any other exercise/sport methodology: be uninformed and do it wrong and you get injured. Doesn't matter if it's crossfit, powerlifting, strongman, cycling, hell even golf has an overuse injury named after it.

People act like fitness injuries only started happening when crossfit became popular.

If you want to bring up cheat reps, bro reps, half reps, etc, those have been around a long time as well. A lot of those are even utilized in bodybuilding to really tear up the muscles at the end of a workout. No competent crossfit gym is going to simply let people get away with it, and that's the big keyword: competence.

Every discipline, every sport, every endeavor is going to have those that take shortcuts, that lack competence, that do things wrong, that give others in that field a bad name. Don't let the actions of a few define the greater whole.

13igTyme
2

You should watch some videos about this. It shows Knowshon Moreno rookie and 2nd year stats. Then his third year or four year his stats took a nose dive. The difference he started cross fit. So here is a peak athlete NFL player in a gym with 40 year old soccer mom's doing the exact same work out. He lost 30 lbs of muscle and only after quiting CrossFit did his stats start to get better.

CrossFit is a joke. Go flail around on a bar elsewhere. Some people are trying to do real workouts.

Edit: to any downvoters, losing 30lbs of muscle is a big deal, especially when you included a new routine to increase said muscle.

Because these are not high level sprinters, they're crossfit athletes. No doubt the camera man is in good shape but none of them are sprinting at probably even a college athlete level.

Not taking anything away from the guys, but they're elite in a sense of they can do a lot of things really good, they're just not world class at one single thing, like a lot of athletes.

A lot of their competition things will be like, run a mile, bike a mile, swim a mile.

Then the next event will be do as many rounds of 10 muscle ups, 10 hand stand pushups, and 1 rope climb of 20 ft, as you can in 15 minutes.

St0rmborn

I doubt they’re even sprinting at a competitive high school level. But it’s not an insult to them because they’re ridiculous athletes. This is just a small part of what they train for and this is also when they’re gassed at the end of a competition.

Not to take away anything from the cameraman, but for context this is from the CrossFit Games or whatever it’s called. Voyageur262

So you're capable of cleaning 380 and running a 6k with weight in 24 minutes like they are? It's an athletic competition. That's like saying olympic gymnasts do weird exercises that don't serve any purpose other than burning calories.

paulcaar
10

That's actual very respectable. Do they have traditional form during cleans and snatches? I am certainly not capable of moving 380 on any type of lift.

Voyageur262
15

Yes they have traditional form - The woman who has won the past couple years (Tia-Clair Toomey) is literally an Olympian in weightlifting. And Mat Fraser (the guy who won) was on the U.S. weightlifting team. They aren't just average joe athletes, I know from the outsider it looks weird but these guys and ladies are extremely fit athletes across multiple disciplines such as weightlifting, gymnastics, running, etc. Dude cleaned 380 after 5 other events which included a 6k ruck run, some all out sprints, legless rope climbs, 28 snatches at 185 lbs, etc. It's simply a competition for a ton of money and they are playing within the rules (i.e. kipping pull ups) to win. Also, props for actually responding positively lol.

CrossFit pull-ups are not pull-ups. It's flailing around on a bar, pretending you're doing something useful

Ivan723
264

Yea... that’s why they’re called CrossFit pull-ups...

You may never use that particular technique anywhere in life, but there’s a lot of things at the gym where you won’t really apply in real life other than just being fit.

Still builds muscle nonetheless and fatigues you, just saying.

paulcaar
94

Gym lifts are specifically designed to never use anywhere else, since you target muscle groups and do everything possible not to accidentally use other muscles.

Yes it fatigues. No it doesn't build muscle. At least not in any sort of effective manner. I could argue that doing the dishes builds muscle as well, but everyone knows you're not going to do dishes for two hours everyday just to have those forearm gains.

As for the name, I could say jumping while also holding a pullup bar is called a Paul Pull-up, but that doesn't make it a pullup. Calling it a bar-flail would be the only acceptable term for me.

The people who compete in these crossfit games do way more than just crossfit. No way you can put on that much muscle by continuing to work out incorrectly.

Ghostface_Pandah
36

That's why they're called Kipping pull ups.

Just like there's a shoulder press, push press and then push jerk, all a variation of an overhead press. In the context of a crossfit class/workout if you say pull ups it's understood its a Kipping pull up unless specified to be strict.

likemyhashtag
1

Using momentum instead of muscle is incorrect.

happyapy
7

Watch a clean and jerk in slow motion. There are so many little movements that utilize momentum rather than strictly moving the weight by muscle force alone. Some Olympic lifts REQUIRE the use of momentum to be executed correctly.

Daimones
5

As an avid hater of kipping pull-ups and making sure that people realize how much better of a work out real pull-ups are - Kipping pull-ups aren't entirely momentum, it actually does use a decent amount of full body effort to generate that momentum.

The problem is that it ends up becoming a core/cardio workout more than an back / arm workout, and doesn't have nearly the amount of focused benefit that a good pull-ups does.

Unique_name1000
9

Isn’t that the point of CrossFit, though? For it to be “functional fitness”. It’s different than bodybuilding or traditional weightlifting because it IS meant to be used in stuff outside of the gym. While it may not build as much muscle to do a “CrossFit pull-up” it’s more effective if you were to ever try to pull yourself up on something than if you were to do a strict pull-up.

Brado_Bear
4

Interesting point, actually. I could see how perhaps kipping would be beneficial in a life or death situation, however I would imagine you’d only need to do one of these. In that case, wouldn’t it be irrelevant? People could probably do one of these kipping pull-ups with zero training, so I’m puzzled as to why train for it.

Maybe a salmon ladder?

Dunno, just thinking out loud here.

changdarkelf
1

Not likely. It’s actually a pretty technically difficult movement.

rtechnix
5

Not really. The point of crossfit was mainly to hybrid high-intensity-interval-training (HIIT), which was quite popular at the time for various reasons but tended to focus more on body-weight exercises and cardio, with traditional work-out/gym-rat looking exercises with weights and random equipment.

To be fair, it is fun, and that's the point of combining the two. But the whole thing was principled on bringing into HIIT exercises that were never meant to be done with speed. CrossFit's gotten way better about emphasizing form to combat it's bad reputation, and hey, anything that gets your enthused to workout is great, but the underlying principle is still faulty.

And no, doing a proper pull-up will make you stronger at pull-ups much better than "kipping". Go to a climbing gym, where people are using pull-up type movements for functional performance. See how many people do normal pull-ups (or, even slower/stricter pull-up variations like frenchies) vs. kipping.

Unique_name1000
1

I’m not saying CrossFit if the perfect type of workout. It definitely has its flaws, but like you said, anything that gets people to exercise is great. If you don’t have proper technique on any exercise though, it’s going to cause injury. That’s why, like it was said below, any CrossFit gym with their salt will take steps to be sure people are able to complete strict pull-ups before moving to kipping, then on to other exercises like chest-to-bar or muscle-ups.

And yes, strict pull-ups will definitely build more strength than kipping pull-ups. No one said otherwise. The point of the kipping pull-up is to use the momentum to get up to the bar using less power from your shoulders. People at climbing gyms are rarely ever using only their arms/shoulders to pull them self up on the wall. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely happens, but most of the time they are getting their power from the legs to push themselves up to the next hold.

rtechnix
1

Campusing is a thing in climbing. As are overhangs where your feet aren't doing much except keeping you from swinging out. Again, no one doing these things are going to use kipping to train for that. Go to a climbing gym. Its all hangboards, weighted pull ups with proper form, and frenchies/lockoffs if they are doing more traditional weight training. Mine even has crossfit classes, but I've never seen anyone kipping.

Look I'm not taking the total piss out of crossfit. Like I said, anything that gets people excited to exercise is better than nothing, and crossfit has gotten better about form and certifying instructors more thoroughly. Still, kipping is pretty dumb and has little to no "functional" benefit over normal pullups except it's easier to make into a timed competition.

budaslap
1

The issue is the kip is a dangerous movement for your shoulders.

5213
1

The idea behind kipping pullups is all about capacity, not doing a strict pull up (which have been featured in workouts before).

That said, a good crossfit gym/instructor won't let people even practice the kip until they can do a few proper, strict pullups with good form (the least I've heard about is 10 strict, then learn the kip).

But the kipping pull up is also a stepping stone to the muscle up, which is theoretically a functional movement (in the event that you ever find yourself hanging off a ledge of some kind and need to pull yourself up).

Crossfit pull-ups (and kipping) are gymnastics movements. Do you watch olympic gymnasts on uneven bars and think they're idiots for using momentum?

anonsurf42
1

No because they have impeccable form while crossfitters flail around looking hilarious lol

TheBestRapperAlive
2

I think you would find that anyone who is good at kipping gymnastics movements will have impeccable form, including competitive crossfitters and competitive gymnasts. If you went and watched people who are bad at gymnastics on the uneven bars, it would also look like they are flailing around looking hilarious.

Don't try man. It's an alien and therefor evil concept that doesn't fit the narrative of their typical gym experiences. You're not going to convince them.

Doesn’t mean they’re not difficult and don’t require strength. They are and they do.

They are kipping pull-ups, used as an efficient method of pull up in competition. Go into most actual crossfit gyms and they will teach you the full progression from strict pull ups with correct form.

Not traditional ones, no. They're more about using your bodies momentum to push out continuous work.

You engage different muscles, kipping does use momentum but they primarily use core muscles rather than back muscles. I also know firsthand that CrossFit workouts contain strict (normal) pull ups too. Including a workout I did today at the box I go to.

happyapy
1

I'd like to see you try and "flail" like they do. "Flail" 20 times while keeping that exact rhythm without letting go. Then come back and tell us how it went.

To be fair in all things, I never did learn how to do butterfly pull-ups. Strict pull-ups, chin-ups, and kipping pull-ups? Sure, but the movement that you mock is hard as hell to do AND continue to do. Once you try it, you'll see what I mean.

I was a pretty high level 100m-400m sprinter in college and did the team southeast regionals in CrossFit a few years ago by way of qualifications.

Anyone who thinks CrossFit athletes are world class sprinters simply hasn't been up close next to world class speed.

The guys running the 800m at elite levels are running faster than 99.9% people ever do in their life averaging 13-14 secs per 100m.

The 100m guys are moving at 10 ~secs.

TV gives no indication of how fast those guys are actually moving and the whole idea is to have no wasted motion which gives the illusion of speed.

It is violent.

I used to be in the skateboarding industry. We would run across this the all the time.

You’d see a skater skating a bowl super crazy, at first you’d think “wow that guys is insane on a board” and then the question of “wait, who the hell is filming this?” And you realize the guy doing the camera work is following in the same pool, negotiating all the same transition, while also holding a camera, and keeping the other skater always in frame.

Question is, from a physiological perspective, does he have the size to outcompete them in other aspects. I’m not entirely sure what these lads are conditioned for, but it sure isn’t pure sprints. Muscle requires oxygen, and - for example - if these guys were to play rugby, you’d want both that speed AND that build (especially as flankers, for example).

Being as fast doesn’t mean you’re automatically superior. Although the camera man is holding a f**ing camera... So big props! Very cool non the less.

sosuken
1

Imagine a workout that requires you to do 50 pull ups, squat 225 lbs 20 times, then sprint to the finish line.

Training wise, you can spend the extra (and finite) time working on getting a few seconds off of your 300m run — but if you fail one of your squats and need to catch your breath, and the guys who have built the strength and conditioning to pick the bar and squat 20 times with no breaks, they will running tens of seconds if not a minute or two in front of you.

Without the baseline strength to compete without pause for the lifting aspect of these types of competitions, the extra speed on a run or rowing machine won’t make up for the gap on strength (if one exists)

I’m pretty sure that type of event is more of a strength competition that involves sprinting.

Judging by the obstacles present I would guess that they did a lot of other athletic things on their way up the field, and then the end of the race is a dash back across.

Also even though the cameraman only has to run with them for the end of the event, it’s still pretty impressive that he can do it with all that equipment.

High level sprinters would never sprint with closed fists.

Well for one they most likely just got done doing "pull ups" or some crossfit shit with kettlebells, so they're already tired, and they're definitely not even close to being high level sprinters.

Looks like the CrossFit Games. Not sure if I’d call them high level sprinters. They’ve probably done many laps of the same course already. The events usually involve crazy endurance + strength combined. Still impressive though!

aren’t these guys just crossfitters?

So hardly ‘high level’ sprinters.

Maybe not slow, but they sure as shit aren’t really all that fast.

Ah Hispanics and other minorities getting guns now? How will the right spin this to limit access without pissing off the NRA?

I predict that they will now try to enact some biased form of gun control.

Seen this before and like I thought then I'll say it now. Those sprinters should be embarrassed. This guy almost kept up with them without a push off start while holding a heavy camera. Dude should be in the event not filming it.

Show me the 4 seconds right before. And he’s at most only going to be a half second behind by the end. The time difference on a short run would account for him running ahead and then falling back little by little he is still with the pack.
