-Best_Name_Ever-
3

I'm guessing it's not their fault though. /r/BoomerHumor seems to be taken and private. I guessed they could've used /r/BoomerHumour at the time, if they didn't mind the British spelling, but the American one is more common, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

zappro_45

r/boomercringe is the superior sub anyways

zappro_45

Not anymore

-Best_Name_Ever-
1

?

If you're talking about the influx of subscribers from that one comment then they merely had a huge growth spike. There's still a 30k subscriber difference, and /r/BoomerCringe still only has about 5 posts today, while /r/BoomersHumor has much more. In every sense of the word, /r/BoomersHumor is still more active. Both in subscriber count and activity.

Honestly, I don't see the need for two subs that similar, and I'm half convinced the original commenter was either just using the subreddit as a hashtag, or was struggling the recall the proper sub's name. Either way, clone subs are annoying IMO.

I just dont know why you wrote so much words. I know the sub has a lot more people in it

-Best_Name_Ever-
1

Because the whole rising circlejerk of using subreddits as hashtags and having it be celebrated and paraded with replies of /r/SubsIFellFor is a personal pet peeve of mine. The annoyed tone and long comment might sound hostile, but it's nothing personal against you. Again, it's more towards the pet peeve thing.

Still, what was the punchline/joke?

I don't like it.

My grandma used to be fucking chill. When I was a kid, she'd stuff me with steak and brownies and hugs. She was always the greatest grandmother in the world. She taught me every fucking curse word I know today.

Now that I'm an adult, and grandpa is dead, she just bitches about "AOC" and the "Green New Deal" and "CBD Oil" as if the world is literally going to end because we're taking measures to stop the literal end of the world.

I don't like this time line. I want my grandma back.

xSpektre

A lot of the boomers I know that go off the deep end usually have had their decades long partner pass or a falling out with children or something. I'd be curious to see some statistics that could show a correlation between traumatic events that make people vulnerable and extremist ideologies/political views

Cabanaman

My grandpa still has his wife and a good relationship with our entire family and it still didn't stop the neo conservative mania he is currently going through.

barkfoot

I'd say that people that have their lives interrupted by events like that will be very vulnerable and be looking for purpose. And with television nowadays I can see how this "issues" are something that make them feel like they're still part of society, doing something good they believe in.

curt10curt10

I'm curious as to what is extremist about questioning the green new deal? Why is it " falling off the deep end" to ask about viability? How feasible many aspects are? How this will be funded? Does the math check out? Or questioning AOC in general? It would be nice if AOC where held to the same standard the president was. He says crazy shit all the time and gets blasted for it. She babbles incoherently and people eat it up because she's the fresh, idealistic face of the future. Let's find a middle ground where everyone think critically instead of reacting to emotions

Is your grandma my dad? Ever since he discovered Ben Shapiro he complains about all the same talking points. This is it. You can't just be racist or sexist anymore an call it a joke. That's all they had and now they're mad.

Game_of_Jobrones
20

You can be racist and sexist in comedy, you just open yourself up for criticism if you do it as a white male. The problem, of course, is that this reaction occurs entirely separate from the question of whether it was funny.

Or to restate the issue, imagine if all comedy was in written and graphical format and you opened yourself up to criticism if you laughed before getting the demographics of the comedian. Comedy should stand on its own. The worst sin in comedy isn’t offending someone, it’s being unfunny.

Peter_Lorre
13

There's a difference between racism and comedy about racism. You can still be as "racist" as you want, as long as it works within the joke, and as long as you're actually funny.

Game_of_Jobrones
5

But it does make it funny. And I’d be very, very worried about someone determining what is the “right” kind of funny. Humor is absolutely critical for many cultures to deflect the weight of their suffering. There is no more emblematic group for this concept than the Jews, who have been oppressed for literally millennia but have always used humor to help cope with their indignities.

Could Mel Brooks, a Jew who literally helped liberate a concentration camp in World War 2, make “Blazing Saddles” today? It’s considered one of the funniest movies ever filmed, but Mel himself thinks it could never be made today because of the ethnic humor. What a loss for humanity - what else are we missing out on because thin-skinned, humorless prigs are quick to hysterics?

Don't expect just a clean-cut end to that ignorance when the last boomer dies. Plenty of millennials have taken up that mantle and will carry it on for years to come.

xenomorphCum
4

There's way less jackass millennials than jackass boomers

CaptainLysdexia
3

I mean, probably so, but...you also have to factor in the inherent jackass-inducing element of aging itself. A lot of people (not all) just get shittier with age. Millennials also brought back flat-earth theory, so we're not totally in the clear. The real test will be how we act in about 20 years.

xenomorphCum
2

Bruv I suggest you take a look at the people behind the flat Earth resurgence because they are decidedly not millennials

CaptainLysdexia
4

The flat earth ignorance is by no means generationally limited to older folks. It's full of millennials and younger. Survey from 2018 of about 8,000 people showed 18-24yr olds had the highest percent of unsure/flat earth, compared with other age groups. I am 38, so right on the millennial age cusp, and by no means putting down my own generation, just saying that there are idiots at every age fostering and resurrecting some truly dumb shit out there. And as of yet, I've had more people under 35 suggest flat earth theory than anyone older. https://imgur.com/a/2qQVduf

xenomorphCum
2

I'd be interested to know what the methodology for that survey was. When I watched the Netflix doc most of them were definitely on the older side.

CaptainLysdexia
3

The core/base of flat earth is definitely stacked with a lot of 45-60yr olds, but when you look at the amount of random support from 18-30yr olds, it's unsettling given the sheer advances in technology during their lifetime that should only further settle the issue. Again, I'm hopeful for my generation, just...cautiously so.

JackDostoevsky

CaptainLysdexia

Thankfully, no. And, if clarification was needed, I wasn't implying that. But in discussing my own experiences, I've had a lot of 20-somethings try to recommend flat earth youtube clips to me to "prove" their theory. Never an older person. The old folks just throw insane religious propaganda at me, which is just as bad. Crazy has no preferred demographic, it strikes them all.

cpt_pancreas
18

I remember seeing an interesting interpretation that the reason its changed partially being due to how relationships have changed. You married young, and even when divorce was legal it was often still frowned upon so you ended up with a lot of relationships where both sides kind of hated each other. Now people marry later and divorce/remarry a lot more often so the experience of "I hate the person I live with but can't do anything" just isn't relatable anymore.

dame_tu_cosita

I had a friend that everytime we go out and was time to end the night and come back home he started bitching about how the night was still young and that please we drink another beer with him, that the alternative was going back home with her wife and he hate her. We were like dude get a fucking divorce if you are so unhappy, we are happy with our wife's and we missed them so we're going home cya!! We ended kicking him out of the group because we grew tired of that attitude and because he started doing coke and bringing random coke heads with him to our meetings

They trust the petrochemical industry more than climatologist and actively spread disinformation to prevent any meaningful action against them. Idk I see bits from the daily show occasionally that are absolutely blood boilingly liberal.

Take this for example: https://youtu.be/3QIWolLM9i8

Sounds reasonable on its surface, but it's probably the most ineffecient way to combat police brutality I've ever seen. It misses the whole point of why black people get murked by cops at an astounding rate. I could go into pretty excruciating detail about this piece, but since we are in a buried comment thread in a post that has mostly run its course I'll keep it brief.

  • You will not change any racist cop's deep seated prejudice with an hour of play acting senarios where the black guy is (shocker) just a normal dude.

  • It ignores all the material factors that enmiserate black people and keep them locked in violence and poverty.

  • It ignores the policy factors that lead to cops having more interactions, and therefore more violent interactions with black Americans, as well the systemic factors that fail to hold cops accountable for their violence.

In summary this is peak liberal bullshit that serves to only create a facade of meaningful change while ignoring any wider socioeconomic factors or class politics (libs hate class consciousness). Now to be fair at the end they do say that this training is not sufficient to curtail violence on its own and that other action is needed, but when you spend an entire 10 minutes of your show talking up a single bullshit policy it's because you think that's the best use of those 10 minutes.

Disney fired him because of some old tweets. I have no idea who was the first person to dig those up but even if that's the case, it's not like those sort of people are a new breed. Political correctness as a problem for comedy has been a thing going on for years, it's not even hard to find interviews and articles on it.

fuckflame
1

It’s always been true, there has always been a vocal minority of easily offended people that actively seek for something to complain about. It’s just that before, those people didn’t have a voice. These are the same people that got angry at Justin Bieber for making a joke about his wife being pregnant on April Fools, and demanded an apology from Bieber for being insensitive towards couples who can’t have kids. These are the same people that got Gunn fired over tweets from several years ago. These are the same people that get kids suspended from schools for rapping along to songs that have the N word.

Essentially, it’s not that people are easily offended, more so that the minority of people who get easily offended just have a speakerphone thanks to the internet and are able to get others to join their crusade much more easily than before.

A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That’s the point, you know? But I just don’t know how that would fly now. There’s a very high awareness of offensive things today—which is good, for sure. But at the same time, when you take a character like that too literally, it doesn’t really work.”

SSJSlopes

It's also that those jokes are dated. People have been getting offended for centuries, it's just that they have a platform now. I like offensive jokes but a lot of the time it's people saying some actually shitty thing and then trying to say it was a joke.

SoManyWeeaboos
3

It has much less to do with dated material and is really more about people finding things to be all well and good until someone makes fun of a subject that is sensitive to them personally. Bill Burr has made some excellent points about this in the past. There are a great deal of entitled people out there who think what can and can't be joked about needs to fit their own personal criteria.

I'm not saying there aren't comics out there that are hacks who say rotten shit just to stir the pot (because there certainly are), but there are so many non-racist/bigoted/homo or transphobic comedians who draw a shitload of unnecessary ire from folks who haven't figured out that not everything is for everyone.

You don't have to roll over on every outrage, but you also don't want to be the "back in my day, we called them Negroes and everyone was fine with it!" guy.

WindomEarlesGhost
1

It’s not true at all.

-Oc-
1

It is. Comedians can't be risque any more simply because everyone in the room at the comedy club has a smartphone, previously you could tell some really dark and nasty jokes and only 20-60 people would hear them, but your name would be spread around as a comic who is known for dark humour and you'd get hired for more shows.

These days tell a particularly dark and "offensive" joke and you get blasted on social media as the reincarnation of Hitler, and then good luck finding work after that nonsense.

Comedy clubs should have a strict no phones rule. Oh and before someone says "wElL dOn'T tElL oFfEnSiVe jOkEs tHeN" or "dOn'T wRiTe dArK jOkEs" that isn't an argument. No comic is alike to another, some comics prefer writing dark jokes because at the end of the day, comedy is meant to look at the darker aspects of life and find the absurd humour in it, without that things would be too bleak and miserable. The funniest jokes are the ones that make you think "It's funny because it's true!", bland, stale, safe knock-knock style "jokes" are only amusing to pre-teens, real comedy flirts around the boundaries of morality and "common decency", and the greatest comedians went the extra mile and took massive risks.

And second of all, so what if you're offended? From the words of Stephen Fry, a legendary British comedian: “It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

Comedy is in trouble, and to pretend otherwise is to be ignorant at best, or part of the problem at worst. Hell, many comedians refuse to perform at colleges and universities now, whereas a decade ago those were their most popular and lucrative venues. And that, quite frankly, is extremely unsettling.

Why? Best way I've heard to describe dark/offensive humour is that part of the underlying joke should always be "imagine if I actually believed this".

Any major city in the UK or US you can go see offensive comedy any night of the week if you want to. Want to stay in? Go on Netflix or Youtube and there's loads of edgy comedians who are totally mainstream

I would say that stand up comedy is more popular than ever. Just because some get offended by something doesn't mean that you are not allowed to say it. Bill Burr is a comedian known for being controversial and he is very successful.

mat_pandaz

Just because some get offended by something doesn't mean that you are not allowed to say it.

Outside America people are getting fined and imprisoned for it. Also a big push from the left is to make what they deem as hate speech, illegal. There are also plenty of college campus's kicking off comedians they deem to fall under this.

So yes, it does mean that.

kittedups

Hey if your joke is >lol black people are retarded monkeys haha then I’m all for that being ruled as hate speech

mat_pandaz
7

And where exactly is the line drawn? Who determines where the line is? What if you are calling a singular person a retarded monkey and they happen to be black?

Zahmby
14

Absolutely not. Just a few days ago I was doing a bit about school dress code, wherein my punchline basically likened girls who show skin to being whores. Doesn’t sound too good, does it? But the mom was framed in such a way that ultimately it was my school’s management being made fun of, rather than the girls. Anything can/is funny if played right and anyone who disagrees is just looking for an excuse to be an asshole. Comedy is not going anywhere anytime soon because, simply put, people like laughing. It feels warm and fuzzy. What is going is people being dicks and saying “iT’S JuST A jOkE bRO”.

mat_pandaz
1

There are many people who would have said your joke was hate speech and you being a dick. The point is that line is a different place to everyone. Who are you suggesting should make where that line sits on a legal level?

Zahmby
4

And yet none of them did. A round of applause and high fives all round. Because the vast majority of people are sane, functional individuals, who understand the joke was at the expense of my school’s management, rather than the girls there.

The only people who are worried about their free speech being take away are the people who want it to be able to say racist and xenophobic things without repercussions, no one else is worried about it because those people don’t use free speech as an excuse to be racist, bigoted or generally hateful to minorities

Whiskey_Latte
7

People should be able to dislike whoever they want and be able to express themselves regarding their dislikes. Sure racisms and bigotry is disgusting and embarrassing, but if you silence them it'll only give more power to their hate. They should be allowed to voice their ignorance instead of forcing them to bottle it up. That would only lead to backlash and violence. Instead they should be recognized and laughed at for being insufferable.

blowski420
5

Well disliking someone because of their character is a lot different to disliking someone due to things out of their control like race, sexuality and gender. Also you feel that the more people get to voice and practice their hate the less likely it will lead to real world repercussions?

I know right? How can anyone differentiate where the line should be between generalized stereotypes and targeting ideological dissenters with violence? I mean it’s a joke. If I said “eating bacon greatly decreases your chances of exploding” that’s exactly the same thing as saying we should throw bacon grease on non bacon eating minorities because they hold archaic beliefs! Hahaha laugh with me. I’m not brainwashed at all and I understand my beliefs instead of being told what to believe by mass appeal /s

How can anyone possibly differentiate between a joke told by a well known comedian and a completely serious inflammatory statement told by someone who is not a comedian? How do you say Panqueque in English: Breadwhatwhat.

What do other planets say to Saturn: "How's the lucky one?"

If you don't like them search for a profesional comedian, bc I'm not. But not being a comedian doesn't mean I can't criticise the jokes they do or the humor they use, I like dark humor, as much as I like stupid humor, as much as I like really stupid puns. But for everything, there's a context, a situation and a time. If you are a comedian which doesn't when is the situation, the time or the context to do a joke, you're not a comedian. The thing is: dark/offensive humor is like a firecracker, or like sex, you can do it in private, with people you trust, with people you have a relation and hey, if someone hears it and he's mad at it, it's their fault. Or you can make it in public, where a lot of people will find it disgusting, and offensive in a lot of ways. Hope you understood what I'm saying, peace ✌

It has a point. Some folks will get very offended by certain topics even if the joke isnt actually punching down. I think these people are the minority but they are trumpeted loud enough where people believe this is the norm. I have heard great jokes about race, rape, and other sensitive topics but they have to be VERY good jokes to pull it off. As a comedian myself there is nothing worse than a new comic going for shock humor without the tools to actually make it funny. Most of us hate it as much as you do.

In 'A Midsummer's Night Dream' which was written in 1595, at the end, a character has to apologise if they had offended the audience. Scenes in 'Henry V' had to be changed to avoid offending the royals.

I'd say that people are LESS censored now than in the past. If you made jokes about some of the things people do today you were screwed but now there are entire communities for having a dark sense of humour. Being offended isn't new.

It's interesting people are interpreting this as a boomer making fun of the current generation. Since this kind of comment is quite popular (and the timelines in question imply that the adult in the picture is probably a millennial) I thought it's something a millennial would draw, a la KIA. I heartily disagree with that opinion of course.

I can see how this could be interpreted as a boomer making fun of kids though, quite easily.
