Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: [Hartman gives a speech to the graduating recruits] Today, you people are no longer maggots. Today, you are Marines. You're part of a brotherhood. From now on until the day you die, wherever you are, every Marine is your brother. Most of you will go to Vietnam. Some of you will not come back. But always remember this: Marines die. That's what we're here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. And that means YOU live forever.

Lock n' Load with R Lee Ermey and Future Weapons with Mac, two of the shows that helped form my love for firearms. RIP Gunny, kick some hellhound ass.

Here's Gunny killing a platoon of watermelons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr1INupPSf4

Porkupine_Adams

And now both of them have passed away. Sad day.

reddit08080

Yes. Here's the link to Mac's passing in case anyone is feeling particularly masochistic tonight. https://www.reddit.com/r/guns/comments/5lqu1n/richard_mack_machowicz_navy_seal_and_host_of/

For me, it was Mail Call. Sparked my interest in military history. Watched it literally every day after school when I was a kid. Fuck.

They were both awesome at what they did.

Sad to see them gone. Watching the old military channel re-runs of Locked n' Loaded, Future Weapons, and 20th century battlefields is what got me hooked on Firearms and Military history.

Conversation btw me and wife

  • Me- “Oh no! This is bullshit”
  • Mrs- “What’s wrong?”
  • Me- “Gunny died”
  • Mrs- “Is that the one you quote all the time?”

Now I have a major malfunction.

returned_liquor

btw means by the way, not between....btw

It’s a newspaper column abbreviation. Thanks though.

R. Lee Ermey has passed away this morning due to complications from pneumonia. RIP to one of the people who got me into this hobby. I'm sure that actors playing new recruits and watermelons everywhere are breathing easier today, but for the rest of us we've lost an amazing man and one of the Marine Corps legends.

You might have to write more or the bot will eat this.

Edit: Can the bot eat a stickied post?

I don't know, but I edited it so it should be long enough now.

A true American patriot, he is sorely missed. I bought a 1911 today not knowing this, I'm hoping he would be proud of of that.

I'm sure he would

25

I thought he shilled advertised for Glock?

Simple, just buy a Glock brand 1911.

I had the honor of meeting him once back in 2004 at the Novi Expo Center for a men's convention. They had Playboy bunnies, athletes, etc. there to do signings and pics, and all kinds of other cool guy stuff cars, guns, and what not. Gunny was there also for an autograph signing. The Marines were there doing a pull up contest where you got a T-shirt if you participated and Gunny was doing his thing at another area of the convention. When I got up to meet him he asked me if I was going to do some pull ups and I told him I wasn't planning on it because there were Playboy bunnies there and I was going there next to take pics with them. He asked me what my major malfunction was. Which was awesome. Then he told me women like men who can do pull ups. Finally he ordered me to go over and do some pull ups so I did.

Best meeting I ever had with a celebrity, he was everything I thought he would be. He also signed a Gadsden flag that I gave to my dad and took a couple pics with me. These were regular pics I'm going to dig through my stuff next weekend to see if I still have them, it not hopefully they're at my mom's house.

Aardwolfblood

I got to meet him in person in '99 during a Toys 4 Tots drive where he was signing books and such and being generally awesome. When he found out I was a Somalia veteran he stood up from his chair and walked around the table to shake my hand personally. I was very touched and he signed my VHS Copy of FMJ with typical awesomeness. RIP Gunny, he was a Marine that would make Chester C. Pully go "Now that's a G-Damn Marine!"

Highenergyperson

That is cool. Thanks for sharing your story. I hope you still have that copy of FMJ but if not you always have the memory of meeting him.

This man, other than living a fantastic life of adventure and service to his country, owns one of the best acting performances ever captured on film.

I know many will say he wasn’t “acting” but he still pulled off a legendary role that no “professional” actor could ever hope to achieve.

RIP R. Lee Ermey. You will be missed.

My thoughts drift back to erect-nipple wet dreams about Mary Jane Rottencrotch, and the Great Homecoming Fuck Fantasy. I am so happy that I am alive, in one piece and short. I'm in a world of shit. Yes. But I am alive. And I am not afraid.

13
TheGoldenCaulk

Sheeit, and they had just sold his custom inscribed Glock at RIA today. The dude was a proper legend, not just to gunners like us, but to movie culture. Everyone knows he's the guy from Full Metal Jacket. Lots of people can recite any given quote from him. If they don't, they probably know him from many of his other roles.

I suppose this isn't a unique sentiment, but this really fuckin' sucks. I wonder... is he going to heaven, or did they need him in hell to kick some ass?

Styrak

Lots of people can recite any given quote from him. If they don't, they probably know him from many of his other roles. could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

8
Stop_the_Scam

I had the opportunity to meet him about four and a half years ago at a gun range where he was doing a book signing. There was a long line of people that were eager to meet him, perhaps overly so as you can imagine. However he took time to chat with each and every person and he was genuinely interested to learn something about everyone. My wife and I were incredibly impressed by how much more like Bob Ross he was than GySgt Hartman.

Back during the Mail Call days and when I was probably 10 my dad took me to some custom car show in Dallas. The surprise (for me) was that Gunny was there signing autographs. He got there at like 2 PM and was only supposed to stay until 5 PM. We got in-line around 3 PM and waited our turn to see the Gunny. We probably didn't get to his table until 5:15 and we still there, greeting fans with a smile. He shook my hand, talked to me and dad for a couple minutes and took a picture with us. We walked through the car shot for a good hour after and he still there, more than an hour after he was supposed to leave meeting fans and taking pictures.

Completely unlike his role in FMJ. He was such a nice guy.

So sad that he's gone.
