"Can confirm" means you are a second person backing up the original person's statement, you can confirm as a second person

I think you would want past tense "confirmed" as in I personally went back and confirmed and the layout is even crazier than initially described. Because your post is read as one block, not two different posts with unique timestamps and places in a conversation, grammar never mattered anyways but you got nitpicked.

AgentRocket

German BMW owner here. It's the "Look everyone, i just changed lanes"-signal. It is important to never turn it on until at least half way over to the other lane, otherwise it might confuse other motorists. Often people will honk or flash their high beams to applaud you on your perfect lane change, especially if you manage to minimize the wasted space between vehicles.

Trucker courtesy has disappeared on the interstates.

Example: two trucks lined up one behind the other, come to a hill, then the one in the rear will pull out to pass, blocking two lanes while he chugs on up the hill at 1 mph faster than the truck he is passing. Ten people will probably flip him the bird.

when you're in traffic and someone flashes high beams, then it's most likely either a cop or you forgot to turn your lights on

Drowning is very common in fast swimming as you are trying to get as much air into your lungs as possible, but if you were to hit a wave, and inhale a lot of water, even the best swimmer in the world is gonna have a very bad time getting it out.

damned_juggernaut

Lifeguarding involves a whole different skill set to competative swimming, for example you would usually take most of your load on your back when doing front crawl, making it evenly distributed, but when doing a chin tow there is a whole lot more weight on your hip, so the lifeguard there may not be the fastest, but id be willing to bet that he can tow humans more effectively than the athletes.

ironwilliamcash
5

Nope, most swimmers have a lot of the lifeguard training already, plus they do drills when training that resemble this. I guarantee those athletes can tow someone faster (source: ex competitive swimmer). Still they probably know better what to do in case someone gets hurt, so they are still useful at a pool during a competition.

damned_juggernaut
2

I had no clue about the competative swimmers doing lifeguarding techniques during training as I have only acheived an RLSS course and no competative swimming medals for a long time. Thank you.

Senshisoldier
3

Half the competitive swim team in high school got their lifeguard certification and worked at the summer swim clubs. It was a summer job that paid more than minimum wage and the test to pass was very easy for competitive swimmers. You could also make extra money if you were a summer swim coach and taught lessons, and you needed to be a working lifeguard at most clubs to do those two jobs. The skills to pass lifeguarding certification were very easy for swimmers. That said, the best athletes out there can still need a rescue for any reason. Our pool had a man that lap swam everyday just sink to the bottom while having a heart attack. That can happen to anyone, though most rescues are definitely inexperienced or young swimmers.

ironwilliamcash
3

No problem. Also in case you want a bit more info. There's a lot of "towing" exercises involved in competitive swimming. Some of them involve tying a huge bucket to your waist with a rope and doing different kinds of swims just pulling it.

Also, a lot of swimmers will be a lifeguard as a summer or student job when younger since they already have a lot of the physical talent and just need to learn the theory.

A few years ago a lady in a BMW (Or Merc, it's been a while, but it doesn't change the story much) cut my wife off to the point she had to use the brakes hard to not hit her overpriced car.

My wife pulled up next to her at the next set of lights and put her window down and motioned for the driver to do the same, which she did confusedly. My wife then told her that she paid too much for the car because it appears they forgot to install the blinkers and then gave her a stupidly huge smile.

Fortunately a couple of seconds later the light went green and she got out of there while mrs cut off took a good few seconds to get going at all after their interaction.

Normal BMW drivers aren’t that bad.

Reddit has this perception, that I haven’t found to be shared by anyone in reality, that all BMW owners are arrogant snobs that are too erudite to be inconvenienced with using the indicator.

In my experience the vast majority of BMW drivers look like people who can’t afford the lease they signed up for, but want to own what used to be a status symbol. Chances are they’d be shitty drivers in any vehicle they drive.

The car does glide across the freeway like it’s on Teflon, which can entice you to slip quickly between lanes, but I don’t think poor driving etiquette stems from pretentiousness like Reddit wants to believe.

Prius and monster truck drivers are absolutely the worst, followed by soccer mom SUVs. There are studies that also correlate bumper sticker count with bad driving, which I’ve found to be universally true.

I have a 320td Compact and live in Germany with a free 3 lanes per side recently finished Autobahn of about 20kms that i regularly drive when making a visit to my parents.

Even when not driving aggressively, i reach 160km/h (~100mph) often before even realizing, because the car is driving so smooth (especially on this new road) and the engine is not getting noisy.

Only once i go beyond that you start to feel it somewhat. It tops out at about 220kph (214 being the number given in the papers, so that should be about right considering the speedometer offset).

And especially if i return late night when traffic is low, i can go the entire distance without having to take my foot from the acceleration-pedal.

The perception of BMW drivers (and drivers of pretty much any other similarly priced car) is almost universal and has nothing to do with Reddit. Whether there is any truth to it or not remains to be seen. From my experience in the particular city that I live in, certain brands or types of cars are popular with particular groups of people (no negative connotations there, just that groups of people exist). Sometimes those groups are defined by the country they learned to drive in, and the rules of etiquette on the road can be noticeably different from the country they now call home. I'm an immigrant, and the city I learned to drive in is way more aggressive and selfish in terms of driving style, so I have to pay attention to how I drive to ensure that I don't let that side of my experience show in my new home where drivers are typically much more generous with space, merging, lane-changing...and make much more use of their turn signals!

You joke, and I joke, but at the end of the day, while everyone seems to consider themselves an above average driver, how many people can honestly say they've gone 20+ years behind the wheel without CAUSING an accident? How about without ever having even BEEN in an accident? If you can say yes to both of those, you're just straight up a better driver than most.

Jmacq1
3

Or a luckier one. I've met a disturbing number of people in my life who thought they were great drivers despite driving like maniacs...and their excuse was "Never been in an accident!" Until they were, and sadly in at least one case it was fatal on their part.

But yes. There are a lot of factors involved, though.

radioactive_muffin
2

I wouldn't say ever been in an accident should count. As I know several people that have been rear ended while just chilling waiting for a red light to change...one even had it happen twice. In defense, it was a z4 though; semi's can't see that shit.

nater255
5

So this is a funny thing. Actuaries/insurance companies/statiticians will tell you that anyone who has been IN an accident, even 100% not at fault, is more likely to be the CAUSE of an accident in the future than someone who has never been in any accident.

I agree logically being rear-ended while sitting at a stop light in NO WAY makes you a worse driver, but the statistics show very clearly that someone who has been the recipient of that is more likely to cause an accident in the future than someone who hasn't.

DUE DILIGENCE: this is most likely influenced heavily simply by the fact that someone who is in an accident may drive more/more often/in worse places than someone who hasn't been. I.E. a rush hour daily commuter in a big city is simply more likely to cause an accident than a retired woman in a rural area who drives occasionally and never in heavy traffic. LOTS OF FACTORS.

James_Razor

I also try to avoid the stereotype as much as possible. I can honestly claim that i definitely did break more often for others to avoid an accident than others had to do this for me.

This perception of BMW drivers as the worst ones is widely spread in the post-Soviet countries. We also believe that there is a piller for each one somewhere. Texas? Going 15 under in the left lane, until some tries to pass in the second to left, then speeding up just long enough to prevent it.

This light on a BMW means you have a malfunctioning light or lights. The arrow indicates if it's the light(s) on the left or right side of your car. If you put your car to the side of the road and keep the engine running, you can get out of your car and check yourself. Often on BMW's both the front light AND the back light on the indicated side of your car are malfunctioning. Just check those, if they are flashing orange, you need to replace those lights. You can either try to do it yourself or take the car to the garage and let it be done for you. Doing it yourself is obviously cheaper, but on newer cars it can be challenging.

Anyway, don't wait to long with it. Having defective lights can be dangerous, these especially.

mobacon
6

I am not sure if OP's post was a joke, but if the light is stuck on, this is probably correct. Probably a bulb. Had an old X3 and this told me when my back bulb went out. Only $649.94 for a new bulb! (/s)

It's connected to your horn. 9 times outta 10 you won't see it as honking and yelling "asshole!" and flipping someone off at the same time can be quite a stretch for ones mental capacity.

We get this a lot with this model. Means the bushings on the left side are worn. Definitely needs new bushings, new shocks and tires on the left (they wear hard when this is out of alignment). Did you notice any loss of power on shifting up and re-applying the throttle? Diff might be shot. Since the rotors get twisted when this happens, I would recommend a full brake service and of course replace the entire cockpit instrumentation and wiring harness in case that light wears out or else the next time this comes up you're not notified!

Please take off your pants and get in line.

PSA: the turn signal is to indicate you are about to make a turn, not to indicate you are currently executing a turn. You should turn it on several seconds before executing your turn. It defeats the purpose if you turn it on only when executing the turn...
