White people in the US are still shot and killed at higher rates than people in other developed countries. Remember the recent Kansas Swatting case? The victim who was murdered for opening his front door was white. The local DA in Wichita refused to prosecute the police.

JuliettSierraFoxtrot

That's because everybody in the US gets shot and killed by police at higher rates than people in other developed countries, mate.

It’s an issue that needs to be addressed, along with corruption in the departments and local governments. It’s not just that police shootings are astronomically high. It’s also that prosecutors, police unions, and local governments protect crooked cops. First, you need to acknowledge that you have a problem, then you can start to address it.

JuliettSierraFoxtrot

Given that it's the Legislative Branch's responsibility to write and pass laws, The Judicial's to interpret and investigate, and the Executive's to...execute. I feel like a Federal Law Enforcement Agency dedicated to auditing state and local authorities makes sense and would be well within the powers of the Executive Branch.

America: looks at millions of guns "I just can't imagine what the issue here is..."

flyingwolf
3

I mean if the numbers equal causation then you would think there would be millions of murders but the simple fact of the matter is that there is millions upon millions of guns and less than 50 thousand deaths a year from them. So guns are really bad at what they're supposedly great at.

SynthD

That's bad logic. Within developed countries the US is way above the normal correlation of guns and gun murders.

Carlscorn

My first thought was "this is obviously not in the US because 1) uniform, 2) the cop isn't threatening anyone and everyone comes out of this with a good laugh. In your honest opinion, if you put yourself in our shoes, are we wrong to feel this way? Like, are few cops giving most cops bad reputation, or should we be as terrified to interact with you as we are?

He-Wasnt-There
41

News doesn't post a lot of the good shit cops do cause it won't generate clicks. I can't speak for areas around high crime zones but at least where I live I have never met a bad cop, and many of my black friends (in this case it is relevant) haven't had any problems either. It is entirely based on where you are and who is at the top.

chris1096
35

It's honestly just overblown in the media. Yes, when these horrible incidents happen, they are horrible. But they are a fraction of a percentage of police interactions. My department, which is large-ish but not even in the top 20, has an average of 2,500 911 calls each day. Multiplied by 365 that is an average of 912,500 times each year that officers in my department are interacting with the public. That's just one department, and we have never had an issue of questionable shootings or beatings or discrimination against the public.

If you were to extrapolate these numbers Nationwide we'd be looking at figures likely in the 10's of millions of police interactions with the public per year. Out of all those interactions, how man lead to some really messed up shit? 100? It is an infinitesimally small proportion.

People also like to point out that "good" cops are helping to hide the "bad" cops, so they are all bad. This simply isn't true. 90% or our work day is alone. The criminal cops do their comes either alone, or with 1 or 2 other criminal cops that they have identified as being like minded. We don't all know what each other are doing because we are all busy off handling our own calls by ourselves.

Lived in many states here in the US and have run in to many cops for many reasons, good and bad. Yes, cops here are more likely to be shitty. But that doesn't mean most are. I've run in to awesome cops, ive run into pure shit piles with a badge, but the vast majority are just people trying to do their job and keep people safe. The problems in my opinion is we are a huge fucking country so we have a shit ton of cops. So even if 1% of cops suck, that's enough to take up a lot of news cycles. Also when they do fuck up, there is no accountability. Which enflames the news cycles. Plus we are the only country of our size where journalists are protected and can call out the state and it's actors. UK, Canada, EU, Aus, etc all have the protections for press but not nearly the numbers. Countries like Russia and China have the numbers but not the protections for the press.

I was up in Vancouver, BC for Halloween one year and accidentally bumped into a cop (not sure if it was my fault or his) while walking up to the Japadog cart. I was certain I was going to get shot or arrested or some other horrible outcome.

Instead the cop said "Oh, excuse me, didn't see you there! Sorry about that!" and that was the end of the interaction.

Overall it went much better than expected. A+, would bump into Canadian police again.

Taken from the Wikipedia link under "The Nine Principles of Policing":

"2. To recognise always that the power of the police to fulfil their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect."

We need that here in the U.S!

TinyTurtlesAreTiny
48

Yeah, once I was out with my friends in Central London and got super drunk. My phone died and I wanted to message some family friends to stay at their place.

Anyway, I drunkenly went up to a police officer and told them I had to contact a friend on Facebook. So he gave me his personal phone, I logged out of his Facebook account, logged into mine, messaged my friend and confirmed the address and that I was going to their place.

I then logged out and gave the phone back to the cop. I think they even helped me get a taxi.

It seems so simple, but they were super sweet. I genuinely feel they're always just trying to help.

Roseredgal
14

They're awesome. I reported some cars parking on the pavement in such a way that I couldn't get my sons pushchair through. They logged it and as it was a recurring issue, went out the next day and caught them blocking the pavement again. They told them to move and called me afterwards to let me know what had happened!

It's not all roses in the UK. Ian Tomlinson was assaulted by a police officer while making his way home in London. He died as a result (though the assault would not have killed a healthy person probably). He was entirely innocent.

Also, Jean Charles de Menezes. Shot 7 times in the head at close range, was entirely innocent, and not doing anything wrong... just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

These kinds of incidents are rarer in the UK though, and when they happen it's kind of big news.

TinyTurtlesAreTiny
3

Yeah, true. But that's very very rare in the UK. I've lived in London for more than 13 years now and honestly, I have never seen anything that a police officer has done that could be considered unreasonable.

Meanwhile, when I lived in the USA or when I travel to other countries, I can definitely see the difference.

I work with officers. Most of them are genuinely good people. One had to shoot a dog that was attacking him about a year ago. He's k9 trained and did everything he could think of to calm the dog but it still went after him. He was heartbroken and actually teared up about it. Didnt stop people dragging his name through the mud all over Facebook. Especially the dogs owners.

That being said, there are some who are actual dicks and I'm just waiting for the day they get canned

Yes, let's teach people how to avoid getting shot by police instead of teaching police to not shoot people.

~80 police killed per year ~1,200 killed by police per year

Those numbers are not a good reason to pull a gun on someone during a traffic stop because they got out of their car.

BadAim
39

I get what you're getting at but you have to know that those stats are completely meaningless. A police officer can encounter dozens of people per day, and the average person will encounter no police in a day, and the chances of a trained and armed police officer surviving in any violent encounter versus the chances of the person trying to kill them is pretty high.

Not to diminish the stats, but I'd assume that cops have a much better chance of surviving being shot than the average person (vests, backup, etc.)

Do we have numbers on how many cops are shot vs how many people cops shoot, per year?

daimposter

I did have one draw a gun down on me when I was 16 but that is because I got out of the car during a traffic stop.

That kind of explains the problem. It just takes an innocent movement to setoff US cops. That's a big reason why people don't interact with the cops in the US as much as they do in say Europe.

StankySeal
23

There are countless dash cam videos of officers being shot dead while walking up on a car during a simple traffic stop. Officers have been shot dead sitting in their squads at a red light. Officers have been murdered just eating lunch in uniform. I know Reddit doesn't usually like cops, and sometimes it's for valid reasons, but there are very good reasons why "innocent movements" can set off an officer in the US. It's a very different climate that law enforcement operates in today.

PM_ME_SMILES_GIRL
3

Exactly. Instances like that are still extremely rare, but at the same time endlessly more common than in places like the UK (where they don't happen at all).

The reality of policing in the US is that getting killed is very much a possibility, and no cop wants to be the one who gets killed. It all comes down to police in European countries like the UK never really having to deal with this or this. In that last one if the guy had not missed she's dead, and all because she wasn't as alert as she should have been.

The funny thing as well is that reddit makes American police seem like these trigger-happy cowboys yet forget that the US has the population of half of the entirety of Europe, a much higher crime rate, and the fact that the majority of US police officers never even fire a single bullet at suspects during their entire career, let alone kill someone.

Back in the day that was how traffic stops worked. I remember my dad stepping out of the car and chatting with the officer when he got pulled over and no one thought twice about it. But yeah nowadays it seems you can't be too safe.

-Edit the video the guy above me is talking about is this one. NSFL. You may regret watching it

Yeah I had that happen a few years back. But he didn't say he wasn't allowed to, he said he "doesn't do that" when I tried to.

he was a total dick the whole time despite me being nothing but respectful, so fuck that guy anyway.

IshMrDude
7

Well think about it, people shake with their right hand. Most people are right handed which would make most cops right handed. This means their gun and most equipment are right hand draw.

If the cop gives you his right hand he can not get his gun or right handed equipment. Now the person that grabbed his hand can pull a gun with his left hand and shoot the cop in the face.

Are the chances of this high? Nope probably not high at all, but would you risk it? I wouldn't.

Usually cops are ok giving fist bumps that way it's harder to incapacitate their hand and they can use their left if they want.

I did have one draw a gun down on me when I was 16 but that is because I got out of the car during a traffic stop.

What? Why would a police officer draw a gun on someone just because they exited a car? What the fuck is wrong wtih the place you live at?

NotTheOneYouNeed
13

Because in the U.S. you arent ever supposed to get out of your car unless asked to by an officer. Guns are legal here and cops fear that they might be attacked by the driver.

TenaciousTravesty
4

Traffic stops are some of the most dangerous things cops do. Because it's so well-known to not get out of your car during one, if you do the cop assumes you're a threat.

FatSarcasticAsshole
6

During driving school many many years ago, I distinctly remember being taught to never exit your vehicle unless instructed to do so from an officer. They make that point over and over again. They straight up say if you exit your car after being pulled over, you risk being identified as someone about to attack the cop.

You turn on the hazards, pull over, remove keys from the ignition, roll down window, place keys on top of dash, and keep hands over the steering wheel where the officer can see them. If you fail to do any of these, you have the high chance that the cop will draw on you.

I’m not saying I approve or think this is ideal. It’s just something we are taught to abide by, and to go against it would be risking your own safety.

missedthecue

Aussie cop here.

Never ever pulled my gun, neither has 99% of the other guys I work with. Wouldn’t even cross my mind to do so if you just got out of the car. People get out of their cars to greet me and then discuss why they’ve been pulled over.

I know American cops just shat themselves reading that. But it’s just a different culture. The risk of someone pulling a gun on me is so minuscule, that it’s not something in the front of my mind.

But then you watch those videos on Police Activity the American Police YouTube channel. People just whipping out guns from their glove box or under their seat during traffic stops and shooting at the officer. No wonder the US Police are so crazy about officer safety, and ensuring that they have their guns out first. I couldn’t work there, just the anxiety of “is this cunt gonna shoot me?” With everyone you meet would drive me to insanity.

I prefer my fellow Australian’s who are all top people. Even most of the criminals try to shake your hand at the end of interactions. You’re all legends guys.

My buddy was a sheriff and would buy kids snacks and slushies. He even once went to a school to talk to someone who was bullying another kid and got them to be civil. He was a great cop and dude but he never made the major headlines. The bad ones will much more often and the average will almost never. We have plenty of problems in America with our police and justice system but if we don't try to see each other as people it's only going to get worse.

From what I've seen, the in good humor pranks are usually received in a friendly manner, like the 'hitting on cops' ones. And when I interact with cops in real life, I joke with them and treat them as I would anyone else and they seem pretty cool (usually).

But we (as Americans) tend to be assholes pretty often with our pranks. Like making donut or pig jokes that are at the police' expense. Or trying to pretend you are doing something illegal.

But if you are just dressed up as a seagull pretending you want their food, they would likely laugh it off with you.

BrentB23

I agree with this. I set up off police officers for traffic control during construction and would always go out and introduce myself and bullshit with them. They're just normal humans out working a job.

Yeah, Aussie cops are typically pretty chill, depending on what suburb you are in. In some of the "safe" places, you'd get pretty relax people who just wanna make sure everything is going okay, but in the bad areas, the cops are a bit more tense, but still understanding.

They are scavengers! I once had a seagull swipe in and take my $18.00 cheeseburger off of my plate, right in front of us, on the gorgeous deck of the Hotel Del Coronado. My friend Deb chased the gull across the deck waving her napkin at it. She lost.

Isn’t the story that they came in and ate a plague of crickets that was destroying crops?

BananaBarfer

Yeah. Apparently they ate so much they would puke it up and then eat more. But that seems a like it's a bit of the tall tale part of it.
