Serious comment: This "falling" sensation happens to us because of our biology. When we were still living in trees, our brains would have dreams that would remind us of falling to make sure we were settled into the tree nicely. We aren't at risk of falling off of trees anymore, but it still happens.

No, it's testing that you're properly paralyzed, it's called a hypnic jerk

pepe1982
59

A researcher at the University of Colorado suggested that a hypnic jerk could be "an archaic reflex to the brain's misinterpretation of muscle relaxation with the onset of sleep as a signal that a sleeping primate is falling out of a tree. The reflex may also have had selective value by having the sleeper readjust or review his or her sleeping position in a nest or on a branch in order to assure that a fall did not occur", but evidence is lacking.

It happens just after you fall asleep or shortly after. It's the exact same feeling when you lose your balance and fall, and that lasts like less than a second, and wakes up up very well. You don't stay awake like you do when you get a real adrenaline dump though, you generally get tired after a few minutes again.

Im_no_imposter

There is some evidence to suggest that that may be the case, but it's not concrete. Another theory is that the part of your brain that deals with spatial awareness somewhat 'shuts down' during sleep, but on rare occasion it may begin to 'shut down' before you're fully unconscious causing you to freak out in response. That's why it only happens early in the sleep cycle.

The cells unglue after time but very slowly. The black spot is a shadow that they cast. It is already smaller, but unglues really slowly

It is not unusual for at least some of it to last for life. And it also appears naturally due to age, because the liquid inside the eye is a mass of cells that become less liquid as we age

Cobra_Fast

Science hasn't identified a definite cause of the "hypnic jerk" yet.

There are several hypothesis that have been neither proven or disproven. Here are a few examples additionally to what you said:

  • It's an evolutionary leftover back from caveman or even monkey times, that keeps you from falling asleep during an important yet monotonous task; e.g. standing night watch, where falling asleep could cause your entire family to get mauled. This idea is in accordance with a study that found stressed people to be much more likely to experience a hypnic jerk.
  • As you fall asleep your muscles relax so your brain might think you're losing your balance, so it tries to stabilize you.
  • As you fall asleep your mind disconnects from your body, your brain might think the lack of sensory input from the inner ear (where bodily motion and gravity is sensed) means actual freefall

Then what's that weird twitch that sometimes happens and I'm just like wtf. Not falling just a random body twitch. Also one time I had a lucid dream and was trying to wake up so I swam out of the dream and woke up. That was weird

SpookyBepisBoi

Florek1509

Sometime during middle school let's say grade 4-6 not really sure, I would have dreams in which at some point would realize it's a dream. But instead of continuing as a lucid dream I would just say to myself, "Damn this is stupid, must be a dream" and force myself to end it and wake up. It was really odd.

mang87
7

Not falling just a random body twitch.

Fucking hate that one. It's really rare and it doesn't happen often, but that head to toe full body twitch out of nowhere always leave me feeling weird and apprehensive, as if it's going to happen again. I always lie there wondering if it's the first sign of some awful degenerative nerve condition, and that next time it happens it might not stop, like some sort of never-ending seizure.

gg_VikingTime
3

I quite often have such twitching. Sometimes it's one half of my body, or just one am. Sometimes my jawmuscles twitch which causes my teeth to hit each other or bite my tongue. Can be quote anoying. But I'm still alive so I think it's all okay

abbott_costello
2

Makes me really feel for the people who actually get seizures

CorpPhoenix
3

It's because OP is wrong. It's not your brain checking for if you're already paralyzed. It's your muscles starting to relax while entering the NREM1-Phase. Your brain is confusing the sudden relaxation of your body with the state of free fall, giving you the sensation of it for a brief moment and waking you up.

If you are sleeping on your belly that won't probably happend to you. The "fake falling" happens when your tounge gets "relaxed" and falls down your throat. Dreaming of falling or something similar plus a little body shake is caused by your brain trying to safe you from getting killed by your own body. The chance of experiencing it is bigger when you're sleeping on your back than on your belly because of the gravity.

Think of it as you being fully awake and vivid during the moment you drift off to sleep.

Then, the second you fall asleep your bed becomes intangible and your head becomes a dead weight -- destined to fall forward flat on your face.

Your whole body tenses as you prepare to die from a fall. But you wake up right as you're about to hit the floor. You mentally shit yourself but realize it was just a dream.

You clutch your bed covers and then proceed to fall back asleep for reals this time and forget about it until like 6 hours after you've woken up and realize wtf just happened this morning that was weird.

This can sometimes be perceived as a simple dream but it's a lot more than that. It's an experience of your brain fucking with you by giving you a 1 second dream that is just you falling over.

GigaIQ
2

I've had it where I have woken up from it. Like I wake up like I feel I'm about to fall out of my bed and frantically try to grab onto something while falling. It's not really bad or harmful (unless you're sleeping with a partner, but who am I kidding), it's just unpleasant to wake-up to.

If it's Sunday night, I've been hung over all day there's a loud knock on my front door, I can continue laying in my cozy pool of cold sweat, no one's there.

I learned about this after it started happening when I'd take a nap in my car while on break. It all the sudden would sound like the world was ending around me. I actually pictured the sun exploding or something.

Traits don't really change unless there are selective pressures that would remove it from the gene pool. But when a trait loses its ancestral purpose it becomes a vestigial trait (a trait that no longer serves its intended function). Goose bumps for example are thought to originate from our ancestors that would raise the body hair under stress to appear bigger and intimidate predators. It no longer serves this purpose but goose bumps still exist

You get them 4 to 7 times an hour in the age ranges 8-12.

You get them 1 to 2 times an hour in the age ranges 60 to 85.

Only some of those "hypnic jerks" actually result in the falling sensation.

siriusly-sirius
2

Long story short: your brain thinks you're dying.

It happens when your heart slows down too fast, and your brain gives you a little jolt and a burst of energy to make sure you "stay alive".

Of course your brain can't take chances with this, so any time you heart slows down too fast, it does it.

I mean like, I’ve had moments where everything is black and then I suddenly regain nothing except consciousness - no vision, no smell, no hearing, and out of nowhere I feel like I’m accelerating downward at a horrible rate; it’s like I wake up in an abyss and I’m falling. Hate that shit. Jolts me up most of the time.

Bunch_of_Shit
10

Does it feel like you are suffocating? Sometimes I'll be paralyzed except for my toes and eyelids and it feels like and anvil is being set down onto my chest and then I fully awaken, scared shitless.

yeetskeetinthesheets
6

Not particularly - I think that’s more of sleep paralysis. Mine lasts only what feels like a few seconds, but in the moment is more like 2 hours. It’s like I lay down at night, eventually go semiconscious, then completely lose consciousness, then suddenly I feel like I’m about to smack the pavement from 80 stories up. Sometimes I do wake up breathless, but not always. It’s like that shit in horror movies where the actor is falling in their sleep and they suddenly jolt up. After the falling sensation ends and I jump, I open my eyes to the sunlight and my alarm. It’s like I didn’t sleep, but rather just laid down, everything went black and time became irrelevant, then I have this horrible jolt and I’m suddenly awake at 10am

SC_ResiN
2

I think I know what you're talking about. I honestly don't know what to do either. You're thrown into it with seemingly pre-rendered feelings and you have to calm or anger you're way out of it as far as I can tell.

I was wondering if you also get the one where you gain consciousness as you said in a dark cool area, but there is no falling or no sensation other than coolness. The only way I can really describe it is it feels like you're very deep underwater. Just floating. With nothingness around you that feels like something. I don't know, but I like the fresh breathes haha

Edit: I know it's not sleep paralyses I get that a lot too. Maybe a mixture of dreams and such.

yeetskeetinthesheets
2

I think I actually have that same occurrence where it’s cool, except the only thing I “see”, I guess you could put it, would be a lot like those “stars” you see when you rub your eyes really hard for a while. If you’ve ever woken up in a car during the day, that weird feeling of “blueness” you’re unaccustomed to is basically like the atmosphere of the dream.

It's called a hypnagogic jerk and it happens because you almost fell asleep too quickly and it's the brain's reflex. It wants to check if you died or if you're entering unconciousness too quickly. Usually you can't fall asleep for 5 minutes or so after the jerk happens.

Edit: to add on, the dream started with me riding my bike somewhere with my mom. When we got there, I went to put my bicycle in the bike rack. But when I was about to lock it my mom said no lock it to this tree. So I went to do that but then she yelled at me to lock it to the bike rack. I went back to the bike rack, and my mom yelled again saying "No I told you to lock it to the tree, you need to be taught a lesson" so she called that guy to punish me.

Sleep paralyzes (or muscle atonia) is pretty common, and u actually experience it pretty often, but don’t remember (like not remembering dreams, which everyone have due to REM phase specificities). Admit it, its very logic to turn of your muscles temporarily while having dreams so that u don’t run away straight from your bed every time u have nightmare. Or... beating the air with the middle part of your body while in wet dream))

As for fear and creepy shit u see, hear or feel. Thats just your brain messing with u) something similar to sensory deprivation effect. Your conscious mind just not used to it.

Next time u have luck to accidentally experience this, try to play with it) For example, relax and try to move your limbs or whole body without using your muscle. Feels really weird but awesome first couple of times. The trick is to always remember that u got nothing to be scared of and thats all inside your head.

for all the ones who haven't felt this, its when you are in the stage of falling asleep, and you start to dream, and somewhere in your dream, something or someone hits or falls on you, or you just fall or trip. this simulates the real life feeling of that "moment of no return" during falling.

For those of you who have never experienced it, let me tell you- you are dreaming (preferably while sleeping) and in the dream, you fall off a height, and while you are falling, it's like your POV gets shifted to you on the bed, and you suddenly wake up a jolt, similar to what you would have experienced if you splashed on the ground in your dream.

It's called a hypnic jerk btw.

You fall asleep too fast, and your brain freaks out.

ShlokHoms
2

Some scientists believe certain factors, such as stress, anxiety, fatigue, caffeine and sleep deprivation, may increase the frequency or severity of hypnic jerks, but conclusive research is lacking on the subject. Intense physical activity or exercise in the evening may also contribute to increased hypnic jerks, said Michelle Drerup, a psychologist and behavioral sleep medicine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic's Sleep Disorders Center in Ohio.

Makes sense the whole sub expirienced the same thing

Aka 'Hypnogogic jerk' - also sometimes makes your legs go into spasm and lift off the mattress, that shit is weird to wake up to. Or maybe I'm possessed?

Almost as confusoriating as Exploding Head Syndrome (waking up to 'a loud bang/bangs' that never actually happened).

Dreaming that you are falling happens when your spine is growing, the dreams stop after the bones have fused and you have stopped growing in height at about 20 years of age.
