real_bk3k

Technically the husband won't have to pay a fine, because he'd otherwise be paying himself the fine. If some other random person beat his wife and thus killed the fetus, that person would owe the husband a fine.

Eye-for-an eye rules still apply to any lasting injuries (or death) the woman suffers, which shows the fetus isn't equal to a person.

The Bible is 100% about picking and choosing.. anyone who puts a lot of critical thinking into religion isn’t overly religious for long..

CertifiedAsshole17

You also have the idea that up until the internet information was hard to come by, making it easier for larger-then-life stories to be accepted as truth.

When someone tells you, that a place exists were you will burn for eternity and suffer unless you choose to believe in Christ - it becomes paradoxical. Even if you don’t believe it, its easier to accept the possibility. If Hell doesn’t exist, you lose nothing as there is no afterlife. But if your athiest ass is wrong? Eternity of damnation.

I reckon this is why humanity was overly religious in the previous few thousands of years. Other then an omniscient sky-lord, what else would make someone want to live when nothing is stopping your neighbours from conquering your land and killing your people?

Religion was the concept of cosmic karma before people knew the world wasn’t fair.

See, if woman hadn't been a real bitch and eaten from the Tree of Knowledge, none of this would be an issue. We'd all be living blissful lives in Eden now. Well, not really - there wouldn't be nearly as many people in Eden as there is on Earth now, but my point still stands.

Women are the reason we left Eden, and we are punished for this every day - that is why we must burn all women before they are born!

Lot’s daughters get their dad drunk & have sex with him in Genesis 19:30-8

agent_flounder
158

Fun fact: Lot's daughter's offspring, according to the story, became the forerunners of the kingdoms of Moab and Ammon and, purely coincidentally I assure you, these kingdoms were rivals of Judah at exactly the time that this story was put together (7th C. BCE)

I know this is a shocker but it is extremely likely that Lot and his daughters didn't actually exist and the story was—gasp—made up to paint these rival kingdoms out to be rape-incest offspring.

Which is to say that this part isn't historically accurate.

Fellow atheists, you might need to sit down for this next part: Abraham and his offspring were almost certainly also made up also, like the Exodus, the Garden of Eden, the Jericho wall, the exploits (and failings) of David and Solomon and many other kings, and more.

I know the surprise is overwhelming. Let me know if you need a hug.

Nothing really says that Adam and Eve were the first humans.

Genesis 1 and 2 both give two separate accounts of the creation of humanity.

Genesis 1:26-31

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Then later in Genesis 2 is the creation of Adam specifically, without Eve.

That's why there are already people in the world when Cain is sent away and banished after murdering Abel.

agent_flounder

Indeed. It's completely insane.

Also, all the great shit Solomon and David are lauded for as far as conquering the land and building a big fancy kingdom are shown by archeological evidence to be utter bullshit.

Proof is lost on Christians. I was devout for 35 years and then it was as if scales fell from my eyes and I thought, "This is all made up mumbo-jumbo." The triggering event was my sweetheart of a wife dying of breast cancer. No loving God would do that, I thought. It was as if a switch had been flipped. I have since heard there was a mythology from about the 7th century BCE that closely resembles the Jesus story and Christianity. It was simply co-opted around the time of the first century. Completely made up except Jesus did exist, according to Josephus, as a rabble rousing in Judea. For this the Romans killed him as was their wont to do with dissidents. His followers used this defunct mythology to create the Christian religions.

agent_flounder
12

Sorry for your loss.

I totally agree proof is lost on Christians when it comes to faith.

I too was devout for decades (~40 yrs) and I had a similar realization. Part of it may have been triggered by my mom dying after a long battle with Parkinsons disease.

The main trigger was finding out that Christians supported Trump in 2017, and they thought he was sent by God.

It hit me like a truck. Without requiring hard evidence, people could believe literally anything. Including, and especially, religion.

I already had accepted there wasn't really hard evidence of God but I had "faith".

But now I realized it was a load of horseshit.

phil8248

There is a tiny voice in my head, that has been there many years, that tells me that my brain is feeble and no better than anyone else. Because of that I won't commit. The question, "Where did the universe come from?", hasn't been answered to my satisfaction. There is also a loud, strident voice that says, "You are a collection of chemicals and when you die you will cease to exist." Who knows? It will be a shock if we do outlive our earthly bodies, we get to heaven and, as some pundit I can't recall has envisioned it, the Mormons had it right. Or maybe the Jehovah's Witnesses. I'm a proponent of the old Viking phrase, "Today is a good day," so much so I have it tattooed on my arm. That's all we get I think, but we'll find out. As Socrates said before he drank hemlock, "Now I get to find out the answer to the greatest question." That could be a paraphrase.

Ask any Christian to relate the story of the Garden of Eden. I particularly like it when ministers and pastors get this wrong. It really screws them up.

They will say that God commanded Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge, the snake tricked Eve, so she tricked Adam. God punished them.

That is not how the story goes.

The snake didn't lie. God did. So why do we think the snake is the evil one?

Genesis 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Multiple heads of the Catholic Church have protected child predators and kept their crimes secret for years, so I don’t think you’re that far off.

asportented
3

That is an illogical argument. A member of a group can perform an act that is counter to the ideals of that group. A reasonable Christian would obviously say that what this pastor is not Christian.

This is all coming from an atheist.

ElaborateCantaloupe
2

First, I was being sarcastic.

But if you’re taking me seriously, let’s dig into it a little bit. We have a group of people who collectively believe in a book that says a man should only be punished for rape if the woman was already engaged to be married. So, according to the Bible, raping his daughter shouldn’t be punished.

Don’t discount the fact that many heads of the Catholic Church have protected child rapists from answering for their crimes for many years.

Those things together tell me that raping children is swept under the rug by at least a good percentage of Christians. Take from that what you will.

Edit: Also, the judge gave him a lesser sentence because of all of his support he continues to receive from his Christian friends and family. Again... sounds like raping your children is ok by at least these Christians.

Yeah, the petition was posted to this sub, by the time I checked it out, it had like 98% of its goal and was getting more signatures every second. I signed it, but there's still this nagging in me that says, "Nothing will come of this, it's fucking Tennessee."

chaogomu

Unless you actually live in Tennessee your signature means nothing.

Hell, the Judge and county can ignore you if you live in the wrong parts of Tennessee.

Sure this got national attention, but you have to get local voters to care, and that's smack dab in the middle of the bible belt. Slap an "R" next to the judge's name and he could maybe rape the girl himself and be safe for reelection in 2022.

There was similar judicial atrocity committed in Montana a few years ago.

A teacher had sex with one of his 14 year old students. She killed herself a few years later.

During the teacher's sentencing, the judge sentenced the man to only 30 days. The judge claimed the girl was "older than her chronological age".

A similar petition went around, and he was formally and publicly censured by the Montana Supreme Court.

A year or so later, the same judge received a lifetime achievement award from his local bar association.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/montana-judge-who-partly-blamed-teen-rape-victim-censured-n162621

https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-montana-rape-judge-20150423-story.html

Moral of the story: the petition may do some good, but there are fuckwits who will tacitly condone his behavior.

It's important to realize that the best country in the world as you call it is 50, very heavily divided states with their own laws and demographics that do not get shared across the entire countries population.

It is arguably one of the most diverse populations in the entire world. And I can draw a really large circle starting in Florida that highlights where most of the negative stories you hear about the US come from. That circle includes Washington DC btw.

The petition is more cathartic than anything. Here's how you remove judges at the state level.

Specifically for TN:

Tennessee judges may be removed in one of two ways:

Judges may be impeached by the house of representatives and convicted by two-thirds vote of the senate.

Upon recommendation by the court of the judiciary, the general assembly may remove judges by a two-thirds vote of both houses, with each house voting separately.

Everyone is going to sign the petition and then move on with their lives but the citizens of Tennessee need to start a coordinated campaign to pressure their statehouse to impeach the judge if they're serious about removing him.

hooooot13

It's not impossible, but a petition probably won't do it. It would take real media coverage. Usually Christian's in power don't get enough negative coverage to face any real consequences

Extremely unlikely. It is very difficult to unseat a judge. The criminal justice system allows for discretion on the bench, so long as he is within the mandatory sentencing guidelines— the judge has technically done nothing wrong.

Public opinion is more useful for swaying the actions of the courts. More likely than not, this is going to blow over and the judge will remain a judge.

The accused would simply stand up, recite those words, and bam , case dismissed... As long as the presiding judge was also a Mason.

Same deal here, only the guy doesn't need to say any particular phrase. The "persecuted minority" Christians who've infested the judiciary like a virulent disease can and will protect their own, even and especially if it makes their entire religion look bad. That's the real problem. Shit the judge gave the guy 4 times what the minimum was. In that scenario, I’m pretty sure you would, by this judge’s definition, count as “a good Christian”. You’d have to murder a non-white, heterosexual man to be “a bad Christian”

12 years is a fucking joke. He’ll likely serve even less when it’s all said and done while in a minimum security prison.

72 years wasn’t long enough. We as a society should have some standards and not raping your own daughter should be one of them.

Can I, as a Christian, actually just go ahead and apologize for this and also say that this disgusts me? Like, this genuinely is making me angry.

Edit: Didn’t intend on this making people upset. The fact that this legislation passed has made me angry about its representation of what I believe, and if there is any hope of making even the smallest ripple of ‘good’ that might come from either an apology or another Christian saying they condemn this, I chose to try. I didn’t intend on starting debates, inciting anger, or belittling the issue. I simply tried to give even just a tiny little ray of hope that Christians aren’t scum, because I myself am trying to believe that too. I’m sorry for the post, sorry for this long edit, and I apologize to anyone that this made things worse rather than helped.

That's why there are so many repeat offenders. They're surviving their sentences and being releases. Better to lock them up forever, even if it's in protective custody.

The problem with us prisons is that they do nothing to actually prevent crime. So instead they become a "crime college" where as in Europe (for an example,) you are actually rehabilitated (or they at least attempt to.)

It's a catch 22. If you own the prison, and make money for each inmate, why would you help them to Not come back? That's bad for business. (this is also why the private prison industry is pushing for longer sentences across the board.)

12 years. 12 years he will walk, probably fine than most because of his "Christian" faith and the fact that he is white. In 12 years, his daughter will be 26, living with the torment, anguish, and the awful memories that are going to affect her the rest of her life.
