HR departments aren't known for their sense of humor, unfortunately. I expect they'll see a guy saying "niggas" and "muthafucka" in uniform and on camera, then instantly think "pr liability".

Hope I'm wrong, though.

the_crustybastard

HR should give him a check for $100 and say, "We appreciate your efforts to de-escalate this intense situation, and would like to offer you this token of our appreciation for your efforts in that regard. However, in the future, we must strongly caution you to be much more careful about using profane language while you're wearing your Popeyes' uniform. That's not something we can continue making excuses for, you understand?" Thanks again and keep up the good work."

Then you don't have to deal with real the PR nightmare of firing the charming dude from the viral video.

weffwefwef23
100

No marketing gimmicks from Popeye's at all. The huge popularity of the sandwich has been completely viral.

Popeye's never had an actual chicken sandwich before, just strips and parts. They introduced a new sandwich over the summer, and it blew up in popularity. And it is a pretty dam good chicken sandwich for a fast food place. Popeye's sold out of the sandwiches in 3 weeks, and it has taken them 3 months to get the supply chain in place to re-introduce them this past week.

Back in the summer, people would go in and buy 40 sandwiches and sell them on the street for twice the price.

throwitawayne
93

Incorrect; Popeyes hired Austin marketing firm GSD&M to come up with a marketing gimmick that would go viral.

You can read about the particulars here: https://www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/2019/08/29/capital-gains-a-chicken-kerfuffle-an-ex-ceo.html

edit: Additionally, because of the success of the viral marketing campaign, the supply available to Popeye's because of their forecasted inventory management ran out, causing the shortage. The sandwiches were around for some time before the hype. It wasn't until they pushed for marketing that their popularity soared.

You’ve obviously never had Popeyes before. Because the chicken in the chicken sandwich is nothing like their chicken tenders. The size and cut of the chicken is totally different, and so is the crispy fried coating that’s on the chicken. In my opinion the chicken tenders at Popeyes are disgusting. If they tried to slap some tenders between a bun and promote that, it would fail. I have tried this new chicken sandwich, and it’s damn good. It’s the best tasting piece of chicken on the Popeyes menu actually.

Ordo_501
9

Had one yesterday. They are good for fast food, but it's still just a chicken sandwich. It's not the sandwich people are fighting over. It's the wait, and then throw in anyone being a dipshit and people are gonna fight. They had stopped cooking sides where I was at so they could drop more breasts for the sandwiches. Out of control hype for a chicken sandwich....

IamPurest
7

The hype around the sandwich is out of control. I used to go to Popeyes once every 2 months or so, and I can say that in +/- 10 trips to Popeyes drive through, there was only 1 time that there was ever another car in the drive through at the same time. It’s crazy how much traffic this sandwich has created to the stores. I’m happy for them. They’ve been in business for awhile and growing slowly, all that hard work should start paying off.

I mean that’s exactly what happened with the AirPods meme last year. Shortly before Christmas those memes blew up.

And then Apple ran out of AirPods

(seriously—I work at a tech store and we went two months without AirPods cuz Apple didn’t have any to send us)

Edit before someone else calls me a Apple shill like they always do when I mention my job: I’m not an employee of apple. I work at a tech store not an Apple store. We sell Apple products among many other things (we barely make any profit off Apple). It’s a minimum wage campus job and I don’t make commission. Idc what you buy.

The only thing I can really tell you about them (besides the new design) is that they’re noise isolating (I think that’s the right term) but there’s a setting that allows you to hear your surroundings. Oh, and it’s $250 so at that point you might as well just buy some other true-wireless earbuds.

Plus you’re never supposed to buy the first batch of a new release because they’re more likely to fail. Wait six months or so if you really wanna buy them.

TrueRusher
4

This is true.

But surprisingly, we just got the new ones in yesterday and no one has bought them yet (even though they spent the last week constantly asking when we were getting them). I honestly don’t know if people are really gonna buy them as much as they did the original. I personally wouldn’t.

Out of the fried chicken chains, Popeyes is probably the best. Their seasoning is really good, and they have good sides.

But, it is still fast food fried chicken.

Yeah I had it the other day. It's really good and really worth it for $4 but it's definitely NOT worth waiting in a 30+ minute line and dealing with the stress and hostile atmosphere that we've seen in so many of these videos.

I mean, it's better than Chic-fil-a? Is that even possible?

mhfkh
66

Yes, MUCH better. Larger breast meat, and the breading is crunchier and more flavorful. And, the bread is like a hearty brioche-type bun and it's also buttered and I believe cooked on flattop.

The spicy version beats Chic-fil-a's spicy by a mile. It's the spicy mayo Popeye's uses. It's bomb, I wish they had extra packets of it for their fries.

_Corndog_

The one I had, the chicken was dry. The breading wasn’t spicy enough. The bun was dense and bland. Chic-fil-a is much better

From the New York Times, 11/5/19:

In a Facebook post in August, Nadiyah Ali, a nurse from Katy, Texas, compared the sandwich to a rival’s: Chick-fil-A’s version, she wrote, tasted as if it were made “by a white woman named Sarah who grew up around black people.” The Popeyes sandwich, she added, tasted “like it was cooked by an older black lady named Lucille.”

Well yeah, when you’re waiting 30 minutes for one it’s left the realm of fast food. My local Popeyes isn’t usually that busy so I didn’t have to wait long, got it, thought it was really good and that was the end of it. With the reasonable expectations it’s great.

anathemal
7

I guess if we're factoring in the time, then the value is highly variable, and runs the possibility of getting stabbed.

Popeyes isn't built for this kind of demand. Not to compare the two, but my local Chic-fil-A will have the same volume of a line every lunch hour, but they have the staff with iPads out there filling orders and I'm out in 5 min. Even disregarding the taste factor, that alone is worth more if we're factoring time into it.

othniel01

I ate one and it was fantastic. I see people post about it being underwhelming or just OK and think they must have eaten it when it was cold or got a bad batch or just don't have high standards for chicken sandwiches. I dunno, it's something special. I have a hard time accepting a lackluster response, I know people have different tastes and stuff, but, man it ticks so many boxes.

I thought it was better than a Chic Fil A sandwich (and I love those), and much better than most other chicken sandwiches I've ever had. The texture is nice and crunchy, the chicken itself is juicier and has more meat than most other sandwiches (not by a large margin but its noticeable), and the bun with butter lathered on seems to crumble in just the right way. The bun is very interesting because by appearances it looks like it's falling apart by the time you're 80% of the way through, but it left a lasting impression.

I am very much 'into' food, so I am quite passionate when something impresses me, and this sandwich did. Wouldn't wait in line for it like this again, but when the hype dies down (if it ever does?) it's not going to be hard parting with my $3.99.

I think maybe he means that they aren't discerning enough.

Like my dad, I could put some high quality 100% grass fed steak in front of him alongside the managers special steak and he'd be unable to tell you which one was better tasting or higher quality.

There are people who legitimately think that all chicken sandwiches reside in a 3 point scale going from Jack in the Box value chicken patties at 1 to Chick-fil-A at 3. They just don't appreciate the finer details, whether it's because they choose not to or because they actually can't tell the difference well enough.

And there are people who are just fucking wrong. Like they think the McChicken is the Pinnacle of chicken sandwiches, and anything else is inferior.

And there is variance between made sandwiches especially at a chain like Popeyes where I've had all kinds of different experiences. So saying it sucks or is mediocre based on one experience when everyone else in the country who has tried it is saying it's one of the best they've ever had seems a little too "poo-poo"ey to me.

His story could have applied to any one of them. They're all the same fucking story. I've never seen a place with more consistently bad service. It's honestly my favorite fast food in the world. Everything is freaking delicious. Nothing compares for me. KFC is trash in comparison. Chick-Fil-A is nice, but Popeyes just has so much more flavor.

And yet, with that said, I probably eat at Popeyes about once or twice a year, because it's such an extreme amount of bullshit to try to get food there. You could pull straight up to the drive thru speaker and order...and yet you'll still have a fucking 30 minute wait.

It's true in some jobs it would be fine but it would be a small set of jobs that don't require you to talk to anyone else or listen to audio queues like alarms. Maybe like software development for example.

Certainly everyone who works in a kitchen like that needs to be able to hear at least their co workers.

They wouldn't know if someone is warning them about something or asking them to do something.

Is it? Because thousands of people are discussing a Popeye's menu item on Reddit threads and around water coolers. Absolute marketing genius.

Yes, the most successful fast food marketing campaign in recent memory that is getting people to wait in lines for upwards of half an hour to give Popeyes their money, is definitely going to hurt the company...

That stuff drives me insane. I dont understand how restaurant managers allow it. I can't count how many times I've checked out of fast food or some other store and was either ignored completely or was told they were not talking to me, but to whoever was on other end of headphones.

The cursing needs to stop too. I was in Lowes this past Sunday and the two cashiers were talking like their outside on their time, ignoring customers and one used profanity multiple times during the conversation while I stood there with my 3 and 7 yo.

There's actually really trashy videos of the Popeyes drive thru too. One is a lady trying to cut in line by slamming her car into another car. There's also the dude arguing with a man in his truck that gets knocked tf out when the other guy tells him not to touch his truck.

So you're better off just making a chicken sandwich at home.

Good sandwich, definitely don’t regret eating it, but nothing special. Certainly nothing to wait in a long line for. I feel the same about Chick-fil-et. If you live by a FireWings (they only seem to be in Northern California for now), get the Nashville Fire chicken sandwich. That’s worth the hype Popeyes is getting.
