I think that basically everything about this instance makes it very easy to not notice. Arm in front of the face, few frames of the stunt actor, the lighting is dark, and it’s so fast you’re not going to focus on him. I don’t know why they didn’t use a black guy for it, but from a technical stand point it works.

HYThrowaway1980

The overwhelming majority of viewers don’t notice because Cameron chose to light the scene in blue, a colour which black and white skin tones reflect almost equally.

This was not an accident. Cameron is arguably the most gifted director there has ever been with this sort of illusion (although Michel Gondry comes close, his fascination with illusion means he draws deliberate attention to them)

See another example here. Watch through to the discussion of rain in reverse.

I note another couple of tricks in this shot that aren’t articulated by the interviewees: Cameron hid cuts between forward and reverse motion with a lighting change motivated by the flashing of the red alert light, and helped mask the fishing line of the “pull-toy” facehugger with the rain effect.

He has an innate understanding of what can be done with lighting, editing and practical effects to convince audiences that what they are watching is real. This skill was no doubt sharpened and honed during his tutelage with Roger Corman.

The Terminator, a film with a budget of $6.4m dollars, would probably have cost three times as much in the hands of any other director, or looked horrifically shonky.

However, since practical effects have given way to visual effects, Cameron has ceased to stand out in this field, as even he has recognised that CGI provides a closer facsimile of what is in his imagination than any practical effect could.

Unfortunately for us as audience, this has come at the expense of the visceral, primal response that in-camera effects elicit, which VFX cannot replicate.

Up until just this second I legitimately forgot it was her and in my mind's eye she was a much more waify and less busty blonde.

But Anna Nicole never did it for me. My oversexed blonde of the 90's was Pam Anderson (via Home Improvement, where she and spiritual sister Deanna Troi gave me feelings I had yet to experience) and I loved her and her nakedness in that awful 90's movie where she showed it all. No. Not that awful 90's movie.

It's pretty soulless and was just cranked out, it's among the bottom tiers of his work beneath even others like Dracula, Dead and Loving It! (the Nielsen movie that isn't very good but I unironically love because I saw it a sweet spot in my youth).

Lawant

Yeah, it's weird how that one holds up so much worse than the first two. I mean, I know many if not most franchises function on a law of diminishing returns, but the politics in the first two don't really rub me the wrong way. Yet the third one, the one that's most recent, is full of misogyny and trans-phobia.

Tiredofnotbeingright
3

I was going to ask but I didn't want to seem hostile! Thank you so much for answering.

I haven't seen it since it came out but I remember as a kid even how much I loathed how he was treating "Ma" from The Goonies, how his love interest was really really young compared to him and only had jokes about how hot she was, does it really read that way? I take it from your comment it does.

Are there any particular pieces of that film that you find just didn't hold up at all, like the joke is totally washed out from reality less than 25 years later?

It's hard for me to judge, though. After a lifetime of struggling for recognition he found it first through dulcet, pedophilic innuendo. Makes it hard to imagine what would or would not be out of bounds for him as a role to take.

Lawant
3

I watched all three in a row again a few years ago, what really bumped me in the third one was a scene where women in the workplace were all carrying babies and a reveal where a woman had a penis. Those things as jokes just feel really weird this day and age. But maybe that was just a thing of the early nineties. Remember, the first Ace Ventura has Jim Carrey spending a lot of time trying to deal with the fact that he kissed a transwoman in a way that just feels odd now.

Tiredofnotbeingright
4

It was an absolute part of the politics of the time.

It's gone done the memory hole now but when Columbine happened for months, and I mean months after, right leaning media openly drew a connection between the location of the high school and what they then referred to as a "sex change clinic."

I know I said it before but I think the word needs to used a third time. For months the right wing answer to why Columbine happened was that 50+ miles away, transgender surgery was occurring.

Thank you for sharing! Thank you for being so open about what you do or don't like about the movies.

And having great taste.

Lawant
2

I'm pretty sure Columbine was a couple of years after these comedies, but yeah, transphobia is ugly and luckily less extreme now than in the nineties. But we still have a long way to go.

Tiredofnotbeingright
2

Oh for sure, it capped the 90's off, but I wanted to give a cultural context to just how "fair game" transpersons (a phrase and understanding that did not exist at all at the time) were.

Tempest-777
1

I’m sure even now some macho dudes will react the same way if they voluntarily kissed a person whom they thought was a woman but was actually a man.

In Ace Ventura’s case, the character is real jerk with exaggerated mannerisms and a bit of an ego, throwing insults to everyone left and right. He was probably equally disturbed that Einhorn was the culprit under his very nose the whole time and that it took him so long to notice. Hence is over-the-top reaction

Communism_of_Dave

Empyrealist
1

There are different types of extras, and some are paid at a higher rate instead of the basic extra rate. This is because they are in the foreground and interacting (and maybe even speaking) just as you said. But, still just an extra with likely no credit.

Source: I've been an extra. There are some "extras" that come from agencies, and they are in SAG. They have experience, know how to take direction, and are there for a specific purpose/focus and not just background zombies. When they arrive, they dont know what they will be doing just like everyone else (they dont get a script ahead of time, etc). But they are identified at the beginning of the call, prepped differently, get a makeup pass and more costume choices depending on what the (first AD?) decides what they intend to do with them in the scenes calling for them.

Its been a while since I've done this. They referred to these extras with a slightly different name/title that I forget, but they are still just "extras".

My friend was in Saving Private Ryan as an extra. He is in the distant background and can be seen walking across the beach, and then is blown up. Except that there is a cut before he is blown up and a double is introduced.

I always wondered why the stunt man could not have just walked the four paces before the springboard.

j_rain
5

It's just a guess, but there wont be an endless number of stuntmans in opposite of extras. And maybe if you keep using the stuntman as extras you will start to notice them in alot of movie.

Using extras for the "focused" shot and then bring in the stuntman will keep the movies more fresh/authentic?

JurijFedorov

Also, it's easy to spot the scenes where it's her stunt double. We never see her face, the body is more lean and tall and she is much more fluent in her movements. It often is a clear change. But it's a good thing as they actually used long scenes to show action.

Raid 2 had much more action and more highly-complex scenes.

The most technically excellent, but I think T2 edges it out by having some flawless emotional beats and a great sense of dark humor. I could watch either at any time tho.
