It's funny how the Reddit opinion on him has changed. A few years ago he was a beloved icon who was beyond any criticism, then he made that god awful mess of a show and everyone hated him and pointed out that he wasn't actually a scientist. Now he puts out this video and he's an untouchable science genius again.

He is an idiot. A few years ago when his show aired I thought it was terrible. It’s difficult because sure his msg is to try to get people to take care of the planet even if he is using a fear tactic, so that’s ok but I still can’t stand him.

Do I get the 20 bucks? Nope never really watched him growing up. It’s not so much his msg, it’s him I don’t like. /r/asablackman you are transparent. Though, being in the community myself, I know there is a lot of hatred that can come from gay men against black people, women, lesbians and particularly trans people. So if you are gay (I still doubt it), you ain't some new shiny thing to me sweaty. Still just a run-of-the-mill bigot.

someone you support has expressed hatred for gay people. You said you were on board with that 100%.

What I actually said was "I don't agree with him on everything, in fact I disagree with him in many areas, but he's still funny as hell, and a great comedian".

am not, and have never been homophobic, and I stand by what I said.

Do you agree with George Carlin or Richard Prior in every facet of your personal and political beliefs too? He's a fucking comedian, and people are flawed. I can look past his homophobia and still enjoy his comedy. You know why? Because he's funny as hell.

You? You seem to be stuck on the gay phase, which makes sense based on the way you talk. Very feminine. Get some more T in your system.

Oh nooo sweaty, you think im a boy! Classic bigotry. There is no shock here.

If a comedian I liked was homophobic, I will, and have, stopped listening. Why should I continue to support someone? There are plenty of people who are just as funny without hate. Plus, I don't like a guilty prang with my humour, when I remember what my money is going towards.

Someone explicitly asked you if you supported his homophobia, admittedly in a list of other bad shit. You said you supported it 100%. Cool stuff.

It's fun to me that if you are gay, you have aligned yourself with people who want you dead - you know that won't get you straight-boi points with them right? Only while you serve their purpose of being an alt-right gay poster boy. Let's pass over to Milo and find out how that's working out for him....

gyroda

Tbf, if you're talking about politics in the "everything is political" sense then the science in his show (or, at least, the way it was Sidney presented) could be political.

That's not a bad thing though. As I said in the last paragraph, everything is political and there are huge political implications when it comes to, for example, climate change (i.e, either there's huge policy changes or there's lots of death).

I just want to emphasize that: you can't take politics out of everything and that's not a bad thing. Just talking about the effects or causes of climate change will touch on some kind of politics.

Disclaimer: I've not watched anything by this guy, new or old. I've no eggs in his basket one way or another.

Muroid

I would have been fine with him keeping all of the subjects exactly the same, but he needed to focus on the hows and whys of things. The little I saw of the show spent a lot of time asserting that it was a problem that people didn’t accept certain conclusions and very little time explaining why those conclusions were true and how the science behind them worked.

I thought he had a fantastic opportunity to educate with that platform and he kind of just used it as a soapbox.

MrMallow

minddropstudios

Are you actually trying to convince yourself and others that that show was good? It's not that I disagree with anything on it, it's just that it was a horrible format, doesn't focus on ANY science, is self-congratulatory, and does nothing to educate people who disagree OR those who agree with them. (I will state for the record that I am not a Trump fan, I am not anti-lgbtq, and I hate most people that are.) They REALLY should have just had the format be like his old PBS show, except he should show regular people how to do science experiments themselves that disprove bullshit myths like flat earth, anti-vaxx, etc. Show people some sweet experiments you can do with solar energy and do some small scale renewable energy experiments. Then go to some large scale versions and see how they relate to their personal tests. His show was garbage, and I was dissapointed as a long time fan that mostly agrees with him.

Letty_Whiterock
7

Doesn't sound like you've actually watched it then if you don't think it touched on science. It's aimed at adults, not children. It's not supposed to give you small experiments to do at home. That's not the point of the show.

minddropstudios
-1

The show wasn't aimed at anyone. And it had no point. Much of the show felt like a long twitter rant either from him or his guests, and they really didn't talk a lot about the actual science behind most things. I know that doing the experiments or talking about the actual science behind controversial concepts is not the point of the show. I'm saying it SHOULD be. That show did not change anyone's mind about anything or help to further any cause at all. In fact, I would argue that shit like "sex junk" actually does way more harm than good for their causes. Even people who fully agree with them aren't going to sit there and watch that absolute garbage. Bill Nye helped educate an entire generation through simple DIY experiments, not twitter. He should stick to the former.

Murgie

What do you mean? I don't necessarily disagree with the opinions expressed on the show, it just doesn't focus much on the science behind why things may or may not be true. Instead they have little cartoons and dance numbers that do nothing but stoke the fires of the anti-science people by making themselves look like ass-hats.

AReveredInventor
1

It was actually the episode where he dismissed nuclear energy because "people don't like it" that turned me off on the show. It was a garbage unscientific show regardless of the viewers politics. People only defend it because they agree with the conclusions.

Murgie
2

While I haven't seen the context of the statement myself, the prevalence of indiscriminant anti-nuclear sentiment in the United States is absolutely a legitimate and demonstrable fact which plays in to what kinds of alternative energy strategies can actually be implemented in practice within the next ten to twenty years.

The stupidity of the population as a whole is something that needs to be accounted for when continued inaction is no longer an option.

Good point. Don’t think so, but at least the other episodes were the generally accepted science topics for school children while the gender of episode was a politically driven message on a highly controversial subject that presented only one minority side.

Khangaline
6

I thought it was one of those things that’s controversial politically and to a certain extent clinically (though the politics probably overblow that controversy) but not scientifically controversial.

I know it’s politically correct to say “this is a complicated issue and both sides have their points” whenever there’s political controversy about a scientific subject, but is the political correctness actually the case here?

Its amazing, almost every day, I find real world applications to and reference back to what I learned from Mr. Wizard's World.
This clown, all he did was keep bowties uncool for another generation. Even his 90's show, much lauded, was hot garbage, intellectually. Wasn't even the best kids science show form that era. But it had a snappy theme song and played well with the short attention span crowd. Stupid people still love to shout "SCIENCE!" at me when they obviously have no idea what they're talking about, so I guess that's a plus.

Except Bill Nye teaches already well established science that he learns

Not always.

He was a GMO conspiracy theorist for 10 years and advocates against nuclear energy.

There have never been any evidence that GMO's are dangerous to the public's health and Nuclear energy could be vital in stopping climate change. We need scientists to notify the public on the pro's and con's of nuclear energy. We dont need a media presenter pretending to be a scientist telling his followers that nuclear energy doesn't feel safe.

JohnDalysBAC

He doesn't have a PHD in any field, or even a master's degree for that matter. He has taken the same basic science courses that almost everyone in college takes. He isn't an expert on anything. He is a paid actor and nothing more.

mcfleury1000

FadingEcho
-7

It's not complicated. Just affirm that in science there are topics which you are no longer allowed to question! (Enviroweenieism is the new religion and thou shalt not question it). The debate is over! The science is settled! Nothing will ever come to light again to prove this or us wrong. We are certain of it.

This is the same guy who changed science as to not hurt people's feelings.

neil_anblome
0

Nobody in science is claiming with 100% certainty that CO2 is causing climate change, it's a theory that is well supported by evidence. We don't know how to predict what happens in chaotic systems like our atmosphere but we can look at comparable systems, such as CO2 rich Venus and make a valid extrapolation that if we increase the concentration of that gas in our atmosphere it will radically alter the climate.

FadingEcho
0

But I was specifically told the science was settled. Repeatedly. I routinely tried to question it but got shut down at every angle. There are news articles stating we should end anti-climate alarmist speech on the internet and in the world.

You are wrong, sir. The Science Has Been Settled. The left told me so.

I'm just against a guy who calls himself a scientist telling people to accept something that's not proven. The whole point of science is to hypothesize, test and debate the results. The only things that are "settled science" are the laws of nature.

LiquitexPro
-11

It's not that we're climate deniers, it's that the rate at which it is changing. Politicians and actors will have you believe that the world is going to end in the next 20 years...Al Gore has said it, AOC is saying it, and Bill Nye is saying it. It's simply a scare tactic to get people to donate to causes that help "prevent climate change". There's no preventing it. What we can do though is to be more conscious about our carbon footprint as an individual and as a community. So it's not that they are lying about climate change, it's that they are claiming it's going to happen in our lifetime.

Warson_Centz
3

What don’t think is going to happen in lifetime? I’m very confused by your comment. Do you think that current temperature trends are not climate change? You’re acknowledging that carbon is a factor but don’t think we’re already seeing impacts even though there is data that clearly shows rising temperatures?

LiquitexPro
-3

I don't think the world is going to end in our lifetime. I think you're missing my point though which is that there is climate change but it's happening at a much slower rate than some people would have you believe. So yes, I do see climate change in current trends (referencing NASA's evidence), but the world isn't going to give way and crack like some Hollywood film, nor is the planet on fire. Again, not denying that the climate is changing, like in the very first words I wrote. I'm denying that the world is going to end by whatever date these talking heads say it will. I don't think anybody knows.

Warson_Centz
2

I figured that’s what you were saying and that’s what I wanted to be sure. But obviously the world isn’t going to crack and explode in our lifetime that’s not what any scientist says at all. You’re not wrong in what you’re saying that the world will not stop existing but you’re ignoring so many changes that will happen. What will happen and already has already started happening in our lifetime is rising sea level causing people to move, climate change causing species to go extinct, regions no longer being able to support crops, and a bunch of other things having major effects of the planet. Will the world ever stop existing? No but the longer we wait the more people are effected to the point where the world may be unrecognizable(this wouldn’t happen in our lifetime probably). You’re arguing that the world won’t explode or something in our lifetime when that’s not an actual argument people are having. Do you think just cause the world won’t actually end doesn’t mean there won’t be world changing effects?

LiquitexPro
-3

Do you think I'm that dense?

Warson_Centz
1

No I don't think you're that dense and that's why I was confused by your original comment cause you actually seem reasonable (there are people who actually are this dense though). I'm just confused how you feel like people are being misled about the rate at which it is changing and the effects that will have. There are already effects being seen and felt across the world and sure the world might not end for you but there are plenty of people and communities that it will feel like the world is ending for in the near future. I just felt like you were try to mitigate the problems that will occur due to climate change and maybe I just misinterpreted what you meant cause your original comment comes across as dismissive of the problem.

The 12 year line is basically the last exit on the highway before shit gets into uncorrectable territory full of positive feedback loops - ice melting reducing the planet's albedo and ability to reflect solar radiation, warming oceans causing the deep ocean currents to slow/stop, etc. Naturally, the actual substance of point was thrown out so conservatives can make her look like she is crazy.

ElitistPoolGuy
1

I don't really think thats a fair assessment of what is going on. The first comment is a generalization that makes it seem like that by exaggerating we don't need to worry about it immediately. The second comment is a specific example of a politician exaggerating contemporaneously in conversation with an interviewer. And in each case, the argument of "12 years" implies if we don't reverse what we've done by the 12 year mark from now then we are most likely fucked permanently. AKA we need to start now. That may be a "political purpose" but only because republicans have politicized the redemption of humanity. Hence the downvotes.
