No, I always wondered if Steve Carrell was just adlibing that whole scene and they just kept filming.

Michael Scott:Maybe there's some sort of animal we could make a sacrifice to. Like a giant buffalo or some sort of monster like something like the body of a walrus with the head of a sea lion. Or something with the body of an egret with the head of a meerkat. Or just the head of a monkey with the antlers of a reindeer with the body of a ... porcupine

I just rewatched the scene, his sadness seems much less genuine than this blurry picture makes it out to be.

After he sits down he says:

How could it get any worse?

Her computer crashed with the porn, and then meredith with the accident, and then... Prinkles! God!

That's three things! I'll tell you whats going on. This office is cursed. and we need to do something about it.

Hes trying to deflect responsibility. The literal next scene cuts to him in his office and he says.

yall_cray
37

He's still Michael, so he is going to use any reason to deflect blame but it isn't an either/ or thing. When Pam says Angela's cat died, Michael said "Sprinkles?", cause he absolutely knew which of Angela's cats (plural) was sick. He can both care AND be happy to have another way to deflect.

yeah alright you aren't wrong about that but the point of this discussion was around why Michael called the cat "prinkles" and if that meant he didn't actually know the cats name. he did. the name came out as prinkles cause he was in the middle of a cry, whether it was coming from grief or he was acting.

Brochax

Go rewatch the scene, it’s not because he’s in the middle of a cry.

Season 4 episode 1 fun run skip to 12:47 and tell me you still feel that he was choked up and in the middle of a cry.

But we see his sales technique is often just knowing 2-3 things personally about a person to talk about before his sales pitch to build a connection (his Rolodex). For Angela knowing she likes cats and one is named sprinkles would be in the realm of 2-3 things to know about her.

Just to clarify, by off camera, do we mean times when they are under the impression there aren’t any cameras on them? I guess I’m never sure when they think it’s on or off unless they explicitly say, like when Michael tells Holly to turn her mic down while they’re making out

schloopers

The example above was “Did I Stutter?”, and it’s an easy one to spot if you watch for the camera placement.

Before they start talking the camera seems to actively stay low and sneak in the annex back door and it stays behind the blinds in the window.

Generally, if the camera is filming through blinds, office plants, etc., they don’t know they are being recorded.

I would strongly disagree with this. The biggest difference between the UK and US version was they made Michael Scott actually successful at his job in his weird roundabout ways. His branch posted profits, when every other branch had losses and he genuinely cared for his workers, even if they didnt care for him. David Brent was the opposite, he was narcissistic, didnt show he cared for anyone and was all round terrible boss who thought he was great.

Personally I think they are both terrible bosses and I never understood what people find likeable about Michael. The "Michael's branch is the most successful" never really made sense either since he is a horrible manager and never does any work but I guess that's the joke.

Like in this clip...Michael doesn't actually give a shit about sprinkles. He just reacted that way because he was already in a mopey over dramatic mood about hitting Meredith with his car and this let's him declare the office is "cursed". If he was in a good mood he wouldn't have cared about her cat and been mad at her for trying to ruin his good mood. Like the episode where He's mad that Kevin might have cancer on his birthday. He's a totally self centered character.

slashdotnot
4

There are plenty of revealing moments michael does that shows how much he cares for them. Off the top of my head, - he's one of the only few who makes it to Pam's art show and is the only one who encourages her by buying a painting. - he's distraught when he thinks Stanley is going to leave for another branch - he idolises Jim and Ryan - he constantly refers to his employees as his family

He shows often he cares, it's just hes an idiot and screws it up a lot which is where the humour comes into it.

The branch being successful is definitely debatable whether that is down to Michael, but it is shown throughout the series that Michael does hold some sort of success in his career. Two examples off the top of my head.

  • he secures the contract with the local business owner in season 2 when him and Jan make a sales pitch

  • David brings him into corporate to try and find out why Michael's branch is doing so well, although admitting his ways are unconventional.

givingyoumoore
2

Completely agreed. We also see him make a sale very quickly when he goes back to sales for half an episode (when Sabre takes over).

Further, Michael was temporarily upset about everyone ignoring his birthday, but once he found out that Kevin might have had skin cancer, he reacts with extreme sympathy and care. Remember how fast he crossed the ice rink when Kevin got the call?

Shovi

Didnt they get profits just because they absorbed the other branch with fewer employees? Because before that they were at the bottom and were gonna be closed, if not for the other manager quitting.

Macro_Nerd

No. There’s a video I can try to find that essentially explains that Scranton was #1 because Michael essentially let anyone do whatever they want. Turns out that Scranton just happens to be a self containing system. Same with when Andy left. Those 3 months were the most profitable.

PretendRock9
12

I've always thought it was Dwight carrying the Scranton branch. The episode where he's at Staples everyone's having a hard time (partially thanks to Dwight) dealing with all of his clients and they go into all the things he does to make the office pleasant. Dwight is insane, but in a way that benefits his employer and anyone he respects. He's constantly the top salesman. He's got a ridiculous number of high value clients. See also when he went to retrieve Pam's hospital bag when she was going to the hospital to give birth and he built them new kitchen cabinets. Dwight's psychological issues result in him being an absolutely devoted employee and even though he's kind of an idiot he works so hard that it doesn't matter. Everyone else there is average at their job, some above average, but pulled back down by some below average - so not really what would keep the branch constantly at the top. The only real standout in terms of performance is Dwight. It's just hard to see that because he's so bizarre.

Macro_Nerd
3

I always recognized he was bizarre, it’s just sometimes it’s a bit too much. Like when he asks Toby about things like the clitoris. I think he’s a very smart man who just believes in Dunder Mifflin.

PretendRock9
12

I don't think it's a case of him being really smart so much as him just being an insane worker. Like in sales, I think Michael and Jim are both better than he is at it in terms of being personable and persuasive and stuff. But Dwight works so fucking hard that it doesn't matter. I mean, he's not a complete moron, but I think he's probably just kinda slightly above average in terms of intelligence, probably a little below average in terms of social skills. He just compensates for anything he lacks by running circles around people in terms of how hard he works. He goes into this when he and Jim are on their sales call and he gives the client his card - he is always working, doesn't take sick days, or vacation, or holidays. His ridiculous work-ethic and devotion to Dunder Mifflin carries that branch.

Macro_Nerd
4

It also helps that Michael doesn’t stifle him with this. That’s another problem when they bring in now bosses, Dwight gets shut down

AliasHandler
7

It’s true. I think Scranton has the benefit of several senior salespeople with established client bases among all of them.

We know Michael was an amazing salesman back in the day (and still is when he gets the chance to sell), and probably built up a big roster of high value accounts. Dwight is a top performer who also sells really well and is always developing new business. Stanley and Phyllis both have clients they’ve had for a really long time. Jim is good because he scored a few great repeat clients early on which helps him meet goals every year.

It seems the other offices just lack that sort of tenure and experience. Scranton can run itself pretty well because the salespeople already have a strong baseline of business that most of what they do is book repeat orders.

Kevin is literally committing accounting fraud. Jim literally gas lights Dwight. Dwight brings weapons to work. Ryan is doing all sorts of sketchy sh*t. Sexual harassment is rampant. Favorites are promoted. Michael is extremely hostile to Toby who is a reasonable HR manager.... the list goes on.

He was doing that, but he really wasn't selling it on anything else. I don't think Michael is a good enough actor or manipulative enough to both remember the name of Angela's sick cat and pretend to be upset about it. I'm pretty sure the writers played up an established trait of Michael's (caring about his employees in a slightly delusional and very irrational manner) in order to juxtapose it with Dwight's attitude and draw attention to how emotionally disconnected Dwight was.

Weed7
3

He's projecting all these other "problems" in the office onto some curse so he doesn't have to take responsibility for hitting Meridith. It's painfully obvious he doesn't really care about Sprinkles, he can't even remember its name correctly. Michael only cares about himself, and I really don't think its as cut and dry as he's just supposed to be "dense", as the series alludes many times to Michael inept and quite sad upbringing.(his moms wedding, wtf??) Michael is a man with a deep, strange origin. But in this scene, I really think he is trying to deflect any blame on himself through others.

Haha Michael didn't give a shit about Sprinkles... He even calls the cat Pringles in the next sentence. He tries to chalk Sprinkles' death up to the same "curse" that "forced" him to hit Meredith with his car.

Then he finds out Meredith needs a rabies shot, and creates the whole Michael Scott Fun Run For The Cure etc. in order to "raise awareness" for rabies, but in reality it's all to deflect attention away from the fact he almost killed Meredith. It's all a vain attempt for him to save face haha.

I know Michael cares about his employees, I just said he didn't care about Sprinkles haha. Those are alligator tears, he's trying to shift attention toward the so-called "curse". It's what makes the episode funny! You have to admit, many of his actions are selfish in nature, even if his heart is in the right place. At times, Michael Scott is hopelessly flawed and socially inept, and these traits help serve the comedy in the show.

Take the episode where Kevin is awaiting his skin cancer prognosis - Michael's initial reaction is annoyance because it takes attention away from his birthday. He brings everyone to the rink for a day of skating to "get Kevin away from the evil sun", even though you know he wants to go skating on his birthday. Even Stanley calls him out on it being part of his birthday celebration, and Michael says "how dare you sir! You are gross!". Cut to the next scene, and there is a big banner saying Happy Birthday Michael when they get there. That's a funny scene, all driven by Michael's flawed self absorption.

Deep down we know Michael is a good guy with good intentions and he genuinely cares about his employees. At the end of the episode Michael shows he cares by standing with Kevin when he gets the call from the doctor, but ultimately he tried to shift the whole day back to celebrating his birthday.

While Michael does have wholesome moments (Pam’s art show, his episode where he says goodbye to everyone, and more), this isn’t one of them. He’s trying to take attention off of himself for hitting Meredith in this episode. He tries to use the cat’s death to say “this place is cursed! First Meredith, now the cat!”. It’s just him trying to get them not to hate him

cabbage_guy8000

Depending on how you look at it, in this episode he hit Meredith with his car. It seems like when he heard about sprinkles he tried to use that deflect attention away from that. Literally right after that scene they all go into the conference room where he tries to convince everyone that there's a curse on the office and that's why all these bad things are happening. I think Michael is just being selfish and manipulative

You know, I thought this too, but after my 3rd time watching the show, I started to think maybe he was putting on the tears to make the situation feel worse than it already is. In true Michael Scott fashion. I could just be over thinking though

I want to see Michael Scott managing the company in Mad Men. It would actually work. Everyone would hate him but he's a legendary salesman and would close on every deal.

And a lot of his worse jokes wouldn't even go over badly in the 60s era business atmosphere.

By being sympathetic to Angela, Michael was trying to take the heat off himself for hitting Meredith with his car. It may have been legitimate sympathy for sprinkles, but I will defend that he doesn’t exactly have the most pure intentions going into it. I believe he is happy to have something to redirect attention to. Then he goes on to use sprinkles’ death as an excuse to say the office is cursed. It’s all an attempt to reframe his vehicular assault as something less serious.

SwisherforFisher

While he does care for them (Pam’s art show is a great example) wasn’t he kind of BSing this because he hit Meredith with his car?

A_Sleep

I love this sub and I love you guys but the delusions about Michael's character never end. 0% of this is him caring about an employee. As already stated, he is undoubtedly trying to distract from the Meredith situation. And as to knowing Angela's cat(s), he clearly displays in other shows using memory tricks to take advantage of others. He's a selfish jerk through and through with moments where he attempts to display compassion, just so he can get what he wants.

I love his character and laugh nonstop but stop pretending he "has a good heart".

Regardless of their job title, Michael doesn't view any worker as better than another. He treats each of his employees (except Toby) with care and appreciation. Leaders should never favor one person or believe that someone is more valuable just because of the nature of their work.

I think this is what makes Michael Scott a great character.

He's a child, he does terrible things, but he sincerely wants to be loved and loves (most) of his employees and treats them like family, because he doesn't have one.

He can be awful, he can be insensitive, but it's not because he's a senseless monster, he just lacks adult development.

At the end of the day he wants everyone to be happy, but also himself.

I always thought that this was just him trying to make smaller things like the cat and the computer into a big deal so people would pay less attention to the fact that he hit Meredith with his car. He was also pushing the "the office is cursed and that's why these bad things are happening" idea so it would seem like the car thing wasn't his fault.
