I have a similar style of porch and never considered adding a lamp. That’s going to change today.
Depending on the weather, you might consider a different lamp or maybe hanging lights you can tuck out of the rain. A lamp like this would not survive the weather where I live. I’d expect it to be blown over and smashed one day or to find mold on the lamp shade.
The significant difference in my porch is that the far side has a wall so that there are only two open sides. It makes all of the difference weather wise. Nothing gets wet or blown off, fortunately.
Velcro is your friend.
Perhaps also a type of lampshade that won't catch too much wind? Like one with less surface area
I have a similar style roommate but haven't considered adding coffee. Going to get a Keurig today!
Don't get a Keurig. Such awful coffee. Get a stainless steel french press (secura makes nice ones) and make better coffee while saving money and being less wasteful.
I gave up mine and went back to a traditional drip and couldn't be happier.
I like setting the timer on my drip so I can wake up to coffee brewing. Helps get me out of bed.
I got an electric kettle and French press. Great coffee and super easy.
Seriously, I spent a whole $15-20 on a basic French press off amazon, and now I have the best coffee in my life whenever I want it.
Coffee produces almost no waste if sustainably sourced and paper filters are used. I don’t understand the selfishness involved in deciding to use plastic pods instead.
I’d be afraid of it attracting bugs if it’s on at night.
It would, but the alternative is sitting around in the pitch black, which would be a bit odd.
Good point. I believe there are some yellow bulbs that don't attract bugs. Need to look in to it.
I have yellow bulbs. There are still bugs, but not quite as many.
Also, the yellow light is far softer, instead of that harsh blue-white light. So my porch light is far easier on my eyes when I turn it on in the dark.
I know people who'll make fun of an Illinoisan for weighing in on this, but in my defense if you go due East from where I live, you eventually get to Eastern Kentucky University. Plus two other things: I live closer to Nashville than I do to Chicago, and I live close to the northernmost tupelo swamps. (In fact, part of U.S. Marshals was filmed here, the "guy with the least teeth" part.)
Anywho...yeah, that's a legitimate concern, but the further south you go, the more likely people are to have screened-in porches. Those are exactly what you think they are: they're porches totally enclosed with screen wire like your windows have. The reason I chimed in on this is because where I live, lots of houses have them, too, because where I live is the place . There's a close cousin called a "Florida room", where it's not quite a room, and not quite a porch. Mine's got windows that cover half the walls, with the other half being screen windows. Because it's still Illinois, we have plexiglas windows we can use to cover the screens in the winter.
tl;dr I wouldn't use a lamp on an unscreened porch.
Yeah, I grew up in southeast Texas. My grandfather lived out in the woods in the swamps and had an open porch. When we’d sit on the porch as night, bugs would swarm around us. Do not recommend.
Is a Florida room the same as a 3 seasons room? In the midwest we have those, and they sound the same. It's an exterior room that's surround by large screen windows. Great for sitting in during spring, summer, and fall.
I guess; I've always heard it called a Florida room. Like I said before, I put Plexiglas in mine in the winter. On those warmish winter days, it's almost a greenhouse.
Thats why you get the lamp but put it in a corner away from where you sit. Bugs go to lamp.
get a bug zapper
Where I live, a lamp outside is like a signaling beacon attracting every single stingning bug within a 10 miles radius.
Where is this?! 😍
The "haint blue" ceiling on the porch gives it away, definitely somewhere down south.
From GA, thinking the same beacause of pollen pods from an Oak tree on the neighbor's roof.
Actually it’s the oaks flower! Botanically called a catkin
Hmmm, we called them "wind shits" for a while now.
That could easily be Texas too then.
Gotta love the South, the blower is useless right now. Don't know where you are but if you are experiencing bad weather I am sorry for ya.
I don't know Texas has thunder storms i might need to have a pizza during the next one
Nothing better then getting high as fuck and watching a Texas thunderstorm roll in.
I have only read of haint blue in a fiction book and I’m super jazzed to lean that it isn’t fiction!
Definitely a real and old tradition, for sure. If you look at old home real estate listings you’ll see it pop up a lot in traditional Southern homes.
All of the porches at my house have haunt blue porch ceilings!
Edit: my phone/autocorrect doesn’t like this
Haint blue is a thing. Here’s a good video that explains it. https://www.facebook.com/1569947223055893/posts/2414306308619976?sfns=mo
Edited because autocorrect likes “haunt” better than “haint.”
Thanks so much for sharing this- it’s a lovely tradition. And gorgeous as well.
I was just thinking it reminded me a lot of Atlanta suburbs.
was thinking Cabbagetown right away
Same - definitely wouldn't think suburbs. This screams old Atlanta to me.
I was just going to make a comment on Haint Blue. Ya beat me to it!
North Georgia from the OP
We did it!
I’m guessing Athens,Ga
Looks very familiar, kinda by mamas boy?
The American south is seriously beautiful.
Somewhere where its warm enough to sit outside in shorts :( Lucky.
Yes, like others have asked, WHERE is this!? It looks so warm, a little humid, sounds of birds. Ugh.
North Georgia! Spot on.
Ugh, lucky! I'm up in Chicago and we just had a fucking blizzard yesterday, for no reason. Today it's mild, but my husband and friends got antsy and booked an AirBNB down in Pensacola for a few days. So we're off to humidity and warm weather soon.
I thought our blizzard was just marketing from HBO? They really went all out for the premier you know
Lol today is fairly decent, beautifully sunny. I feel the same.
It was coincidently perfect for GoT. There was also that snow/rain mix a few days before. (I'm in Chicago as well)
North Georgia porches REPRESENT!
Very cozy, love the weathered look.
Oooo, I love yours too!
Another lamp. Interesting.
was definitely gunna guess cabbagetown in atlanta lol
Lol Cabbagetown? You talking about Cleveland?
Edit: misread the message. Ignore me, I'm drink.
It's funny you're the second person I've seen say that. I also that it was Cabbagetown. Man, I love Cabbagetown.
I live in South Georgia and the bugs would make this unbearable. It looks so cozy!
I was wondering that, not sure if you watch hometown but they always remove the bug screen from the front porches and yes it looks nicer, but being attacked incessantly by mosquitoes in the summer would mean id use that porch zero times
In my experience (cooler climate but we still have mosquitoes in summer and autumn), screens and glassed-in porches just reduce the amount of mosquitoes anyway. Mosquito repellant smoke (don't know the precise name of the product in English) can help a bit though. And the amount does depends on the weather, mostly temperature, humidity and wind.
I live in Augusta and have a pool so in order to be able to enjoy it in the evenings I have to have an exterminator come out and spray every month in the summer. Its not 100% but its close...
I live in coastal Georgia. All hope is lost.
As soon as I saw the blue ceiling I figured this was down south
Looks like around Piedmont or East Point. Wish I could afford a place around there!
Ugh I just moved to Savannah. Really missing the mountains.
I'm in Chattanooga with a similar but less cozy porch and I knew this had to be close.
As soon as I saw this I thought “That looks like Georgia.” One of the most beautiful states to live in imo :)
Depends on where you are in the state, just like with any other. My part of GA looks like garbage.
is this athens, ga?!
Athens or Gainesville was my guess!
Hey I'm from North Georgia!! I'm over in Woodstock/Canton. But I'm just about to south into Atlanta.
Athens GO DAWGS
Everything about this photo screamed "the south" to me.
Stoners: I would totally smoke there
I came here to say this <3
Me too man, me too. Plus, there’s a deadhead chick on the porch! Makes it look so much more inviting as a safe and pleasant place to have a smoke.
Happy Cakeday :)
Why thank you fellow Redditor...I don’t feel like a 6 year old.
Her t shirt checks out
Georgia is greeeeeeen AF right now. Cozy and springy. Dope shirt.
And strangely not boiling hot yet.
I am not looking forward for the heat waves! It needs to be like this forever.
The humidity is coming :(
Brent Midiland? Loved your era.
I love the blue porch ceilings in the south 😍
Yes!! “Haint” blue! Supposedly the color wards off evil spirits, also supposedly is unappealing to wasps. We painted our Nashville porch ceiling this color a couple of years ago. No evil spirits before or after, fewer wasps than before. 🤷🏻♀️
also supposedly is unappealing to wasps.
also supposedly is unappealing to wasps.
In other words, it wards off evil spirits.
I didn’t know that about the wasps! I live in NJ but I dream about southern homes; they’re so lovely.
Supposedly also repels mosquitoes, at least that's why I've heard it's used also around the Mediterranean.
Gorgeous OP, really lovely.
Yeah, and the porch is nice too
Not too many yet. This weather is giving me whiplash. Was humid as hell this past week, and now it's 67 and breezy today. But that is a citronella next to the deer skull. Keeps at least 3 mosquitoes away.
Everything about this looks like heaven.
Honest, no shade question: people who do up their porches this way, what do you do during a storm? I love the homey, cozy feeling but I'm too lazy to move things when a storm comes. I'll keep my shitty plastic chairs lol
It stormed this past whole week, and I didn't move a damn thing lol.
So everything became a mess and you cleaned it up? 😁
It rains almost every afternoon in the summer in Florida. It fucking pours for like ten minutes and stops but that's long enough for my whole fucking front patio to get drenched. Any time it rains I have to move the table and chairs I have so I don't get wet. (I'm out smoking a lot)
Your porch looks like it would be so relaxing to be on during a warm, raining day with a cup of tea in one hand and a book in the other.
Is your porch single?
How much is rent for a place like this?
She needs a bowl of kush and then this would be perfect. Well, turn on Franklin’s Tower and then it’d be perfect.
Smoke weed xdd
Drugs are bad
Im feelin' 10/9/76 FT for this pic...
Your roommate has good taste in music!
True dat. Weir everywhere
He has good taste in roommate
I would love to see a picture of this at night with all the lights on.
I'll try to remember. Our actual porch lights are purple lol
Athens? I pass these types of houses while I’m walking to class lol
Ding ding ding! Waiting around for Michael Stipe to take a stroll.
This is what I want out of life.
A good friend just sharing the moment in the morning.
Also, I used to have that BT speaker. It was pretty good. Did you get it at Target too?
Holy saturation Batman!
Vibrance levels to warp 9. Contrast level to warp 8. Sharpness levels to warp 6. Give her all she's got Lt. Laforge!
I don't think the saturation has been messed with. I've seen plenty of porches painted brightly like that, and early spring in the south, trees do get that green.
This is lovely, but what happens when you have thunderstorms or blowing wind? Doesn't everything get knocked around?
We call this "porchin" in New Orleans, and it can sometimes be an all day affair.
I can guarantee you that zero pot has ever been smoked on that porch. /S
Ayyy what’s up ATL
Hey I have that rug!! I love it!
Lovely. Looks genuine unlike many porch scenes. I’m looking at you miss soft goods.
Hey now! Looks like a good place for some sunshine daydreams to me!
Nice shirt roomie 🤙🏼
She has good taste in music
Good ol’ Grateful Dead
Steal your face right off your head!
Good ole Grateful Dead. You seem like nice folk.
Lol if I did this everything would be stolen off my porch
Your roommate is a cozy place?
That seat doesn't look all that comfy.
WOOOOOOOOW. That’s a great fucking porch.
God damn happies
Nice view 👌
I have that same rug! This looks dope. :)
Looks nice on a breezy day. I have the same flower pot (on rug)!
I love that rug!
Neon trees. That's new. Ffs.
Absolutely stunning view. My wife and I are hoping to leave California and go to Oregon.
I have the same rainbow carpet on my porch! Walmart. Lol
Ugh. I love the south. I can't wait to move further south, it's so beautiful.
Just curious but what did you use to take the photo? Just your phone?
I'm dying over this
Is she single ?
Of course not.
Have you got a crush on her ?
No answer, the saddest answer.
Had to zoom in. On my phone it looks like the person is smoking from a long thin glass pipe.
I love the green wall!
This is my dream, to have a nice uncluttered porch to sit on and watch the world go by.
I would sit there with 5 fat spliffs and an afternoon
I first read pooch and scanned the whole picture for a doggo
You're so lucky to have a roommate you can jive with.
Perfect pot smokin’ porch.
Is this Mandyville in Athens Georgia?
I’m working on buying a house right now and I’m saving this picture for porch inspo 😍
Porch of my dreams! I absolutely love it! 😍 So cozy and colorful and lovely.
I know you bumped those colours, and I care not.
A lovely space, there.
Hey do you consider taking another roommate? Lol
Now blur it all little bit, get one of those Music Spectrum Visuals, some chill music and put in on YouTube.
Congratulations! You are the most popular Lo-Fi Hip-hop 24h stream channel in the world!
Something just broke in me. As much as I want to get out of the South, a front porch like this could convince me otherwise.
Where do you buy those kind of string lights?
Where I'm from we have to chain our chairs to our porches because people steal them, and anything else you leave in your yard
Now that looks cozy!!
Your roommate's silhouette reminds me of a NSFW poster on Reddit
The weird ways women can sit is the type of every day or second tier sexy that just makes it great to be a man...that likes women. That calf cleavage is the truth.
Maybe I need help.
PORCH ENVY. Mine isn't covered so can't decorate it quite the same way. You did good!
That is a fine ass lampshade man.
You guys shop at Lowe's? I just see stuff I got from Lowe's haha
This is a level of decor that simply cannot be attained at a house full of guys
Rug on porch is underrated
Nice cedar porch and vinyl siding
Thought I was on r/Austin for a second
Omg I love it! It’s so perfect - I just want to come and have Sunday morning coffee and chat
This is absolutely wonderful exclamation I love everything you got going on on that porch! Do you mind telling me where this is, I’m digging it!
The porch ceiling is painted "haint blue." You must be in the South.
Trying to get that crotch-shot I see.
I love that your house is green!
Do you need another roommate? I volunteer as tribute.
This is awesome OP but I can't help but think it's humid there
I obviously haven't even seen the full view of your home, but I am already thinking that it is beautiful and I am jealous.
I’ve always wanted a suburban porch like this, but I always end up living in cities.
Whoa. This triggered some lovely college memories.
You can tell her to stop flexing her calf like crazy. We get it
How much weed gets smoked here?
Is she single, hot girl here we go top of Reddit etc. etc.
But seriously, I've only recently realised the power of having loads of plants everywhere to really get that cozy/kitsch look inside or outside the house. Rugs as well. Gorgeous!
